Evolution 10-String Stick is Orange Tree Sample’s latest release in their Evolution line of virtual instruments. For this library, the developer sampled a Chapman Stick.
The Chapman Stick is a unique musical instrument that Emmett Chapman invented in the late 1960s. It’s an innovative approach to a guitar, featuring ten or twelve strings that are divided into two sections: the bass side and the treble side. The physical instrument itself is designed to be played by the player taping the strings with both hands using “hammer-ons” and “pull-offs.”
The Chapman Stick gained popularity over the years with notable 4 & 6-string heroes including Tony Levin, Trey Gunn, and Steve Adelson’s stand-out performances on the instrument. The Chapman Stick has a distinctive sound suitable in a variety of musical genres, including rock, jazz, and classical music.
The instrument was created in collaboration with Rosewood Recording Company and is NKS-ready, allowing it to be integrated with the Native Kontrol Standard. The library features 14.5 GB of 24-bit samples, including articulations with 2 dynamics and 4x round-robin, sustain and muted notes, string slaps, and divebombs. It also has built-in effects for production-ready tones and a mapping system that lets users set how they trigger articulations.

Evolution 10-String Stick is easily played with any midi keyboard or easily programmed in your DAW as opposed to the thousands of hours of practice the physical instrument demands. The library contains multiple articulations including sustains, muted notes, natural harmonics, plus special effects like string slaps and divebombs. The customization options allow users to control various parameters directly through connected hardware including a powerful mapping system that lets users set how they trigger articulations.
