If you’re familiar with the Orange Tree Samples Evolution engine, you’ll find the layout and functionality of this instrument very intuitive. It offers a powerful mapping system that allows for the easy selection of articulations, making it versatile for various playing styles and programming.
The snapshot presets are a great starting point, offering everything from traditional banjo sounds to more cinematic textures. One of my favorite features is the auto-legato function, which handles slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs effortlessly, adding realism to performances.
The chords panel is another highlight, providing multiple options for detecting chords based on the notes you play. I especially enjoy using both the chords mode and the strum mode together, which creates realistic clawhammer patterns instantly. Strum mode, even without chords, is fantastic for quickly crafting lines or performances, giving you instant access to expressive banjo licks.
The instrument’s yellow keys serve as manual strumming keys, repeating the last note or chord played, which can add a lot of character to a performance. The upper yellow keys trigger various instrument effects like slaps, hits, fret noise, and more, further enhancing realism. With both the strum panel and strum keys, you have comprehensive control over the performance.
The built-in Tone FX rack is another great feature, though it’s tailored for the guitar instruments in the Evolution series. It offers plenty of room to shape your sound, from subtle adjustments to completely transforming the banjo into something entirely new.
A deep dive into the setup panel reveals even more possibilities, with adjustable pick position controls, access to both the original recorded samples and the processed signal, and advanced options like double, triple, and quadruple tracking with humanization controls.
Overall, I’m really enjoying this banjo. I didn’t realize I was more of a clawhammer style banjo player until I explored the techniques in depth. The ease of use, especially with chord recognition and programmable strumming/banjo rolls patterns, makes it easy to get those instant banjo licks whenever needed.
