Thoughts

The Atelier Series is a series of Kontakt libraries from Musical Sampling, focusing on ease-of-use over sheer depth and complexity. They take a more “performance based” approach, with master patches that include long notes, short notes, and legato, all within the same patch with no key switching. The samples themselves are incredibly realistic and fluid, and the legato can easily do very fast runs and phrases that would be difficult with other libraries. The “workhorse” patch offers a sort of standard playing style, not too soft or aggressive, while the “phat lead” will have a much more sharp, accented attack (great for short notes that need to make a statement), and the “emotional” patch offers a more lyrical performance with progressive vibrato.

You also get both “natural” and “tuned” versions for each instrument, and the natural version has slight pitch imperfections and adds a more realistic touch, while the tuned is more tonally accurate, yet possibly less realistic and human-sounding. Finally, they include sounds of the players taking breaths, to insert during breaks in the phrasing if you’d like to make it as realistic as possible.

There are some limitations with the lack of dynamic layers and no vibrato control, but for the price I really can’t see any significant flaws. The instruments are highly musical, agile, realistic, versatile, and just sound great!
