Review: Boutique Mood Guitars by Naroth Audio

Boutique Mood Guitars is just that – intimately-played guitars with vibe and mood to add flavor to your tracks. With a clean, easy-to-use interface that allows you to go beyond the typical collection of bass and guitar samples to create things like pads and plucks out of sounds as diverse as Telecasters and bass harmonics, Boutique Mood Guitars can be played cleanly or with a full dose of vibe by either using the onboard effects or factory preset patches.

Thoughts

Boutique Mood Guitars is all about intimacy and laidback profiles. From gently played guitar samples to controllable hiss and tape noise, Boutique Mood Guitars is full of lo-fi intimacy. The library is small (weighing in as a download of only 800 MB) but brings plenty of vibey goodness to the party. Including both harmonic and traditional samples from a vintage Telecaster, a modern Stratocaster, a Fender Precision Bass, a Gibson J-185 EC, and the nylon sound of an Orpheus Valley Solea SA-C, Boutique Mood Guitars shouldn’t be viewed as solely a sampled guitar library.

The heart of this library is as much about the custom lo-fi delays, the creative convolution reverb IRs, and the 3 sound design layers on offer as it is about the samples themselves. The sound design layers can take Boutique Mood Guitars into atmospheric and ambient directions far beyond a library of simple guitar samples. There is a pad layer made from the source material that offers a beautiful sheen and shimmer, a dust layer that blends in a soft layer of hiss, and a tape layer that introduces some lo-fi tape noise into the equation. When experimenting with the ADSR envelope, these layers can be used to great effect to create beautiful atmospheric pads that can vary in sound from something filmic to something akin to an ambient pedal-steel guitar. There are 3 pre-built moods for each of the sample guitars: a clean version with just the clean guitar signal, an airier version, and a thicker moody layer that focuses more on the roundness and bottom-end of the samples. There are also 3 EQ profiles to help you fit the samples into your mix without a lot of fuss. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the engine itself; it’s simple, clean, easy-to-use, and full of vibey goodness. It’s a very artistic-feeling interface that’s just plain fun to look at. All in all, Boutique Mood Guitars by Naroth Audio is a nice little library with plenty of lo-fi beauty and enough creative potential to keep you experimenting with understated guitar sounds for a good long while.
