Thoughts

A lot can go wrong in creating a sample library. In the recording process, the mic placement can just miss the sweet spot. In editing, the samples can lose all their life with heavy-handed noise reduction applied across the board. And in implementation of the instrument, things can get out-of-hand losing site of what truly makes the physical instrument so special.

With The Famous E Electric Piano, Orange Tree Samples got every step correct and the sonic glimmer that shines through the speakers is a testament to why we’re so passionate about virtual instruments.

It all started in North Hollywood at Leeds Musical Instrument Rentals. In the early 1980’s the LA studio scene was hopping and one of Leeds’ modified Fender Rhodes Suitcase 73 Electric Pianos was highly in demand for studio recording. That keyboard had the letter “E” stenciled on it to denote the company’s  inventory.

“It wasn’t long before the “E” became one of the most highly sought-after electric pianos in the LA studio scene in the ‘70s and ‘80s, being featured in countless hit songs and albums.”

In 2015, with the guidance of Grammy award-winning producer/recording engineer Jay Graydon, the “E” Rhodes owner George Mamalakis started working to sample the distinctive tones of the instrument. The two set out to sample each note of the keyboard with their own performance system to capture a massive 18 velocity layers for each key with decay captured until silence.

In 2017 the team started working with Orange Tree Samples to take the sample set forward and create a Kontakt Player instrument.

The instrument has several options to customize the tone of the electric piano. Adjustments can be made via the instrument’s tremolo controls, 4 front panel chorus models, and a modular effects rack.

There are just enough controls to change up your sound without turning the instrument into a hybrid library. I like how this library focuses on bringing the original magic of the physical keyboard, amp, and cabinet to the user without going overboard.

“Harold Rhodes, founder and builder of countless generations of Rhodes Electric Pianos call the “E” Electric, “the best Rhodes I have ever heard”

In this first look video, I play through the snapshot presets, play around with some of the instrument controls, and try to share my experience checking out the library for the first time.
