Thoughts

Orange Tree Samples latest virtual Bass guitar instruments are mirroring the release history of Leo Fender’s Bass guitar creations. The first Bass guitar Orange Tree Samples released was the Evolution Flatwound Bass. This highly detailed instrument with a sample set from a P-Style (Fender Precision Bass) was the first Bass guitar the developer created for the powerful Evolution engine.

It only makes sense that Orange Tree would then follow the history-of-bass-guitar timeline and set their sights on a J- Style (Fender Jazz) Bass guitar for the Evolution Roundwound Bass.

Evolution Roundwound Bass is a Kontakt Player instrument compatible with both the full and FREE versions of Native Instrument’s Kontakt and loads into the “Libraries” tab.

For the sample set, the Evo Roundwound Bass was set up with round wound strings which play to the strengths of this instrument giving it a bright and defined timbre.

The library comes with a nice range of presets that do well to show off the diversity of timbres the instrument is capable of creating.

I’ve been using virtual instruments for almost 30 years and the thing that gets me excited about the Orange Tree Evolution guitars, and now Bass instruments, is the attention to detail when programming the instrument for playback by the end user.

Evolution Roundwound Bass comes with Orange Tree Samples FX Rack TONE panel. With many instruments I steer clear of using Kontakt internal effects and prefer to use premium plugins. The quality of these effects and and range of effects included in the Evolution engine sound fantastic so with these instruments I do use built the in effects.

The interpretive legato slides between notes and the engines ability to add natural sounding fret and finger noise are a highlight of this engine’s power. Anyone who has tried their hand at making sampled instruments knows that these little details don’t just happen by sitting down and sampling a bass guitar but by taking care to develop a workflow and engine that can interact with a well thought out sample set.

So much of the “magic” functionality and control of the Evo Roundwound Bass can be adjusted in the Set Up panel of the instrument.

It takes more than just a great recording engineer and scripter to add the last aspect of development that is vital to capturing the character of the instrument.

It takes someone to supervise the project that understands those little detail and devise a way to incorporate the random “human” elements, like pick position modeling and fret noise, that allows the end users to experience realistic playback with just a few notes on a keyboard that imitate the unique characteristics of human hands, 4 strings and amplification.

In the video above, I share a first look of the library, playing through some of the presets and tweaking a few of the parameters along the way.
