Thoughts

I really like the sounds present in Liminal Vocal Textures: Vol. 2. Once again, as we can expect with Crocus Soundware‘s Liminal series, these are highly textural sounds meant to be played as pads, chords, and underscore. As opposed to a traditional choir library with legato and multiple articulations, instead of focusing on pure realism, this library focuses more on evoking moods and emotions, and it surely succeeds in this regard.

There is a really nice new “layering” feature offered, allowing you to stack multiple articulations and morph, or crossfade, between them using MIDI CC data (easily mapped to your controller of choice). This allows you to create ever-evolving sounds. For instance- shifting between the vowel sounds ah, oo, and oh seamlessly on the fly. Or you can start with a single soloist on the bottom layer, add a second soloists to create a duet on the middle layer, and have a full ensemble on the top layer, creating the effect of an ever-increasing group singing the same articulation. The possibilities and sheer amount of articulations alone is impressive, but when you add in the option to stack articulations, select from two individual soloists for each articulation, PLUS the ability to now morph between them all with crossfading- yeah, there’s a TON of fun and experimentation to be had with this library.

Whether you’re looking for soft, airy, delicate sounds, or dark, brooding, almost alien-sounding growls, this library can do it all. Full of a unique sonic character that falls between human and synthesized, it definitely succeeds at evoking a wide range of moods, some articulations genuinely left me wowed at times.

Besides a fairly unusual and cryptic interface (the quick help function is GREAT, but I still find it could be organized better categorically), it’s very easy to recommend this library to those who want something a bit different and often strange (in a good way).
