Sonixinema have once again presented a solo stringed instrument with Intimate Legato Cello. However, instead of focusing on the breadth of articulations and playing styles as in the Contemporary Soloists series, Sonixinema have instead homed in on a single articulation – solo cello legato. With 11 different legato patches, Intimate Legato Cello provides something for both slow, melodic patches and faster runs, but the instrument also provides a variation in mic placement to give composers a well-rounded solo legato cello that can sound rich and roomy or fit right into a close, tighter mix. While the focus is on legato playing though, Intimate Legato Cello also includes 7 sustained patches with a variety of sounds and spaces to extend the flexibility of this instrument even further. I’m really impressed with what Sonixinema have done here. The legato within Intimate Legato Cello far exceeds what I’ve heard in their previous solo stringed instruments. The legato is dripping with realism and emotion and the rebowing feature is especially useful to add a human quality – a sense of “realness” to the instrument. At this price tag, you would be hard pressed to find a better solo cello.
