Thoughts
Orchestral Tools are among the industry’s best sample library developers. Not only do they produce some of the best staple libraries on the market (i.e., Berlin, and Metropolis Ark), but they have a knack for creating authentic libraries that represent lesser sampled parts of the musical landscape. With the Baroque Bundle, Orchestral Tools have taken their Berlin Harpsichords library and bundled it together with their fantastic library, Miroire. Berlin Harpsichords might be the definitive harpsichord library out there right now. With two harpsichords (French and Italian) and a nice range of articulations, Berlin Harpsichords offers the most authentic harpsichord sound I’ve yet encountered.
However, the jewel in this bundle for me is Miroire. While Miroire fits perfectly into the pocket of Baroque or Renaissance music, it also has a home in the modern composer’s toolkit. The strings consist of an authentic period violin and viola with authentic Baroque tunings, along with the basso continuo – an ensemble consisting of 2 cellos and a bassoon playing in unison with a contrabass playing an octave lower. While the strings are tuned perfectly, they feel almost detuned in the best kind of way, likely due to the nature of the authentic instruments, the Baroque tuning, and the gut strings on the violin.
The woodwinds and brass in the library are solo instruments with a unique and beautiful timbre. There is also a male and female choir singing sustains, syllables and more. Finally, a folder labeled “Inspirational Combinations” is filled with just that – inspiring song-starter patches that fit perfectly into this musical milieu.
Again, Miroire is perfectly at home in the world of Baroque music, but it will also easily fit into modern tracks and scoring. By definition, it’s harder to find a place for the harpsichord within a modern context, but if you can, Berlin Harpsichords are probably as good as it gets. The Baroque Bundle is a welcome addition, especially to those looking to recreate period music for the high brow feel of the Renaissance.
