From the first play, I appreciated the ease of navigating presets in the browser, thanks to the extensive tagging system. The dual-module XY pad allows you to favor one of the four sample banks or blend the FX automation, each with individual controls or program settings. This flexibility adds a new dimension to sound design, enabling users to create performances effortlessly with just a note or a few chords. The detail and depth of programming in the step animator ldoes much of the heavy lifting, making Arpology X an intuitive and powerful instrument.
Exploring the acoustic-tagged presets, I found they truly conform to their category, delivering exactly what you’d expect in terms of sound and feel. Changing up the source samples instantly transforms the character of the sounds in inspiring ways, and with over 900 sources to choose from, there’s no shortage of creative potential. Adjusting the tempo for each preset revealed new characteristics, with some presets having a sweet spot depending on your performance style. The randomization feature also opens up playback in exciting and unexpected ways, adding an element of surprise to your compositions.
I was particularly impressed by how smooth Arpology X runs in the Kontakt 7 engine. CPU usage is low and engine, despite the dual XY automation, enhanced FX and a sophisticated step automation the developer has proven that a complex instrument, with the proper programing, can work without hogging all your RAM and pushing your computing power to the limits.
While exploring different presets, I discovered one with FX animation that, when combined with the step animator, allowed me to easily customize and create something entirely new and exciting. The instrument’s dynamic range is remarkable, offering everything from delicate, nuanced performances to bombastic outputs. This versatility makes it a tasteful and refreshing alternative to the atonal, ambient textures often found in XY pad-controlled instruments.
Overall, Arpology X stands out as a valuable production partner, helping you quickly bang out cues and tracks across a multitude of genres. The mix of synthetic and acoustic sources is particularly well-balanced, making it suitable for various styles and moods. For me, this might just be the best release from Sample Logic in a long time, offering endless possibilities and a fresh approach to multi-source XY pad instruments.
