Checking Out: ALT Choir by Westwood Instruments
Westwood Instruments‘ ALT Choir library for the free Kontakt Player stands out as a unique and deeply expressive tool, offering beautiful vocal performance that sets it apart from typical choir libraries. Described by Westwood as an “immersive experience,” ALT Choir brings forth authentic vocal performances that have a truly natural feel, providing composers with a distinctive palette of sounds unavailable elsewhere.
From playing first notes of the library, I was immediately drawn to the sophistication of the sound of these singer. The choir has a delicate, emotive quality that beautifully balances the spirit of a contemporary choir with a touch of the traditional, offering a versatile blend that feels both fresh and timeless. To explore the library’s depth, I created a quick mockup using multiple tracks and articulations. Even in this rough initial sketch, I could hear the unique texture ALT Choir brings; the voices blend beautifully and, yet deliver an emotion that makes the library feel intimate and engaging. I paired the choir with the Roots Dust Piano, a free Kontakt Player and NKS compatible library from the developer. This piano pairs beautifully with ALT Choir, enhancing its soundscape with a gentle, atmospheric touch.
Longtime fans of Westwood Instruments will recognize the developers commitment to crafting sophisticated, cinematic tools. I’ve personally enjoyed working with Novella Origin, and Rotor, each of which provides composers with rich, immersive scoring tools perfect for nuanced cues or songs. However, ALT Choir feels like a step forward even for Westwood Instruments. The addition of hybrid synth textures derived from the choir, combined with flexible SATB sections for those looking to approach scoring more traditionally, allows for a remarkable range of creative possibilities, from scoring delicate, introspective moments to layering complex harmonic landscapes.
In short, ALT Choir is as much a joy to play as it is a powerful tool for creating beautiful, emotionally resonant music.
