PulseSetter Sounds have a vibe all their own. They know how to take familiar soundsources and turn them into something useful, unique, and special. Their latest Omnisphere offering, Re:Coil, takes the familiar string samples from Omnisphere’s huge set of samples and soundsources and breathes new life into them, creating high-quality sounds that are great for underscore, film work, and more.

Review: Re:Coil for Omnisphere 2.5 by PulseSetter Sounds

In addition to some great Kontakt libraries, PulseSetter Sounds are one of my go-to developers when I’m looking for dark, cinematic, trailer-type sounds for my soft synths. They have a knack for turning traditional samples on their ear and transforming them into something epic. Re:Coil for Omnisphere 2.5+ is no exception. Re:Coil features 207 patches of trailer and score-ready Arps, Keys, and Pads.

Thoughts

One thing I will mention from the outset is that Re:Coil doesn’t follow the traditional Omnisphere categorization structure. The sounds are still nicely categorized, but that, and the “PS” prefix at the beginning of patches, can be a slight nuisance.

Normally, I review each soft synth soundset by breaking the sounds into categories, telling you how many patches exist in each category and the nature of the sounds you can expect to find there. However, the categorization of Re:Coil is such that you will find a number of patches falling into multiple categories, thus making it more difficult to remark on the categories individually. However, that is the only place where Re:Coil doesn’t necessarily shine.

The sounds themselves are first-rate. As with most PulseSetter soundsets, there are a good number of tempo-synced BPM sounds, as well as hybrid keys, pads, basses, and more. The overall tone of Re:Coil is slightly dark and foreboding, but don’t let that fool you – these sounds can be used in a plethora of ways and in many applications. There are a number of scoring elements of the soft and warm variety that would make for great underscore when working on a documentary or feature film.

Again, the soundsources here come from Omnisphere’s exceptional supply of string samples (violins, cellos, guitar, etc.), so the samples being used are first-rate. However, to think this is in any way a “strings” soundset would be completely wrong. While there are sounds such as string spiccatos and sounds with recognizable traditional string samples, there are plenty of electronic sounds, dreamy synths, etc. These all just happen to start life as string samples in Omnisphere’s deep well of soundsources. There is some good use of the modwheel here, mostly to fade sounds in/out or to open and close filters. There is an interesting concept to some of the BPM patches as well, as many of them do not repeat over and over again as you might expect from an Omnisphere BPM patch. Instead, many of the BPM patches are tempo-synced leads or other instruments that simply have a temp-synced delay on them; you play the notes and listen to a tempo-synced decay fading out. This is really a cool use of the BPM category.

The folks at PulseSetter never just throw something out there – you can tell from the quality of these sounds that a lot of care and effort went into the design of these patches. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that you could score an entire documentary using this soundset alone.

Facts
