Review: Original’s Media Toolkit by Spitfire Audio

Spitfire Audio delivers on its widely successful Originals line with Media Toolkit. Boasted as a composer’s secret weapon, this library houses 2.5+ gigs of audio samples, 21 different signals recordings, and 24 different preset instruments. The library delivers great sound design using acoustic instruments as well as tonal and atonal percussive instruments.

Original’s Media Toolkit normally sells for $29 from Spitfire Audio.

Thoughts

Media Toolkit is a blend of sound design instruments and found sound percussion. It delivers quite a bit of content and variety helped in no small part to its processed signal mixes and onboard effects. It is not an everyday writing patch, but it can be with a well-thought-out creative plan.

Media Toolkit offers a succinct recording experience inside Spitfire‘s innovative engine, leaving little to no learning curve for composers. It houses 2 reverb plugins, Lush and Plate along with attack and release functions. The combination of controls will help create new and interesting sounds as you write and record. The core instruments, specifically the Piano, Guitar, Flute effects, and Synths, offer the best methodology for writing your cues and play well when blended. The instruments are intimately recorded, which adds a poignant touch to the mix, and the onboard reverbs are deep and resonate well after key release.

Media Toolkit offers only a handful of what I would call sustained melodic patches. The instruments are the Piano, Guitar, Flute effects, Synths, and a Pad. The rest of the library is percussive. All the patches offer three signal mixes of various types, but composers may want to add their own plugins to differentiate their sound. The Atonal instruments in particular are non-chromatic and have a short attack velocity.

The Piano and Guitar are lush and the Synths offer a great sine-wave for lead or underscore. If you wish to get the most out of this library, have a game plan. Layer your sounds with different mixes and write primary and counter melody with the acoustic instruments.
