Checking Out: Valley Forge by SRM Sounds
SRM Sounds’ third release, Valley Forge, is an ambitious and evocative instrument led by the renowned post-minimalist composer Max Richter. Known for his genre-defying compositions for film, ballet, and opera, Richter has a deep understanding of scoring for space and science fiction. With credits including Arrival, Ad Astra, and Invasion—as well as the hauntingly beautiful score for The Leftovers—Richter brings his signature atmospheric and emotionally charged sound to this instrument. He describes Valley Forge as “a kind of imaginary spaceship,” and that description perfectly encapsulates the sonic experience it offers.
At the core of Valley Forge is a 15-piece timpani ensemble, recorded at Studio Richter Mahr. The library includes acoustic timpani hits, clusters, rolls, superballs, and FX, all processed through analogue electronic devices to create deep, evolving drones. Additionally, Richter’s original Minimoog has been sampled as a synth accompaniment, adding another layer of depth to the instrument’s sound design.

The Valley Forge contains eight total instruments: six timpani-based instruments, a dedicated drone instrument, and an analog synth instrument sampled from Richter’s Minimoog. One of the standout features is the dynamic microphone positioning.

The instruments come with key-latched multiple effects that are a surprising additive, expanding usage in a way I would not of considered.

With four different microphone perspectives (Close, Tree, Room, and Ambience), the library provides incredible flexibility for shaping the sound. The Close mics capture intricate detail, while the Room and Ambience mics expand the sound into vast, atmospheric spaces—perfect for crafting cinematic tension and otherworldly textures.

The timpani cluster hits and rolls are particularly intriguing, producing unpredictable and evolving rhythmic elements. The Superball effects, known for their eerie and evolving resonance, sound fantastic in Valley Forge and add an organic unpredictability to compositions.

The drones instrument, a fusion of analog synthesizers and processed timpani recordings, is a standout tool for ambient and tension-driven scoring. One of the more unexpected but fascinating elements is the Kobayashi Maru signal within the drones instrument, which introduces a subtle layer of grit and warmth, enhancing the library’s sonic complexity.

The analog synth instrument, sampled from Richter’s Minimoog, is a beautifully crafted addition that provides both soft, evolving tones at lower velocities and biting, expressive leads at higher velocities. The inclusion of built-in effects such as saturation, chorus, phaser, and tape delay further expands the range of possibilities, making the synth highly adaptable.
At first glance, the combination of timpani, drones, and synths may seem like an unconventional mix, but Valley Forge is more than just a collection of timpani and synth sounds—it’s a meticulously designed toolkit for composers. The synergy between these elements allows for deep sound sculpting, providing instant access to textures that blend orchestral power with electronic manipulation. Whether creating sci-fi soundscapes, intense cinematic underscores, or experimental compositions, this library provides a unique and highly playable set of tools.=
Valley Forge feels like it could be an extension of Max Richter’s own scoring process—an intimate glimpse into the sounds and techniques he might use in his own work. It’s an inspiring and highly specialized library, offering a powerful blend of orchestral and electronic elements that work seamlessly together.
