Checking Out: Panacea by Soundiron
Soundiron’s Panacea is a deeply resonant and evocative instrument that brings together the organic warmth of hand-played tuned percussion with the added expanse of Soundiron‘s world-class sound design. Featuring samples from eight unique instruments—including steel tongue drums, hand pans, kalimbas, and ancient slit drums—this Kontakt Player library (compatible with version 8.1 or higher) offers a wealth of tonal and textural possibilities for underscore, cinematic composition, and world music.
The library comes in at 25 GB and includes an impressive 168 NKI presets. These range from traditional articulations like strikes, and taps, to far-out effects and designed presets that take the original sounds into mysterious, ambient territory. Instruments like the Cosmic Hand Pan, Tiny Thumb Piano, and Whale Drum provide layered articulations and extended techniques. Presets are broken down into main NKIs for each instrument and a wide array of “FX” presets that use filters, arpeggiators, LFOs, and pitch modulation to sculpt entirely new sonic landscapes.
As a composer and fan of these tonal percussive instruments, I find Panacea incredibly inspiring. The layered engine is intuitive, allowing for deep customization. You can assign different sample sets to up to three layers, giving you control over pitch, mallets, filters, and effects. The arpeggiator and LFO tools are particularly fun for rhythmic motion and pulsing textures.
However, one critique I have is that Panacea feels like a collection of instruments rather than a unified ecosystem. While each sound set is powerful on its own, I would have loved the option to layer across all instruments in a single NKI. I would have loved to build a patch that uses a Whale Drum attack, a Thumb Piano texture in layer two, and a Kalima ambience in layer three—all within one interface. While you can technically stack multiple NKIs in your DAW to achieve this, an all-in-one instrument would have elevated the flexibility and sound exploration to another level.
Panacea delivers a rich, cinematic toolkit for composers seeking lush tonal percussion and a plethora of sound designpatches. It’s both meditative and experimental, warm and strange, cinematic and terrifying—all in the best possible ways. Soundiron has done an excellent job bridging organic sound sources with modern production tools, making Panacea a wonderful option for artists and ambient composers alike.
