Checking Out: Flute Textures by Emergence Audio
From the very first play, Emergence Audio’s latest hybrid woodwind instrument proves itself to be a cinematic and evocative powerhouse. Right out of the box, the multis are reminiscent of Leonard Bernstein’s use of woodwinds, evoking that same lush, expressive quality. And then just three presets in, it becomes clear that this instrument is not only versatile but also incredibly useful for a wide range of genres. It is tasteful, diverse, and reflects the aesthetics of film scores that span everything from classic musicals to contemporary sci-fi epics.
The dynamic range is impressive, transitioning seamlessly from subtle, restrained moments to more ominous, sci-fi-inspired pads. It excels in creating tension, whether it’s a delicate, atmospheric cue or a more intense and unsettling sonic landscape. Diving into the preset categories, the Alternative snapshots provide a great starting point. For those unfamiliar with the Infinite Motion Engine, the modwheel functionality is an easy and intuitive way to blend between the left and right sample layers, making it simple to shape evolving textures on the fly, although the engine has loads of functionality (far to much to list hear so check out the Infinite Motion Engine 2.0 official video below)
The sample quality truly shines in the more straightforward presets and some of my favorite presets combine two sample sets of random flute tonguing, combined they produce unpredictable playback, adding an exciting layer of conflict and texture. Correlated presets, on the other hand, allow a deeper exploration of the diversity within the sample set, utilizing the engine’s extended functionality and effects to seamlessly blend playback in ways that consistently surprise and engage the listener.
Moving into the Experimental presets, the instrument takes you to otherworldly realms. These presets are perfect for suspense, sci-fi, and dramatic scores, pushing the capabilities of flute articulations into chilling soundscapes. The Infinite Drones category exemplifies what the Infinite Motion Engine is all about: creating atmospheres that continuously evolve, adding an impressive amount of subtle variety that goes on and on. Meanwhile, the Pulse presets bring a new rhythmic dimension, tempo-synced to your DAW for perfect integration into any track. The Swells presets open even more possibilities for dynamic shifts, making this library an essential tool for composers.
Woodwinds are often overlooked by the modern composer and often treated as the “red-headed stepchild” of the virtual orchestra. Yet, Emergence Audio has taken the lead from this underappreciated family of instruments and transformed it into something truly special. Each new instrument in the Infinite Motion Engine is expressive, flexible, and—most importantly—highly usable. Whether you need it for melodic lines, ambiguously atonal drones, atmospheres, or effects, this instrument delivers. Adding unsettling tension has never been easier or more affordable.
In terms of hybrid woodwind instruments, this release checks all the boxes. For the asking price, it’s value is hard to beat. I can’t ask for much more from a virtual woodwind library at this price point.
