Thoughts
When Mattias Eklund, Toontrack Head of Sound Design started the Hybrid Harp EZKeys lirbary, he was focused on creating something that was more than ‘just’ a harp.
“For a recording I did with my own band, we used a harmonium. . . a very warm-sounding instrument that has a rustic and folky feel . . . This made me go further down this ‘Nordic’ path and, I figured, a traditional Swedish nyckelharpa would blend in well. When recording, the engineer (Henrik Oja) had used ocarinas and a bowed glockenspiel for the soundtrack he did for a game called Unravel 2. I loved the vibe the music had, so we went ahead and recorded them as well. These instruments were really the missing components and truly add to the melancholic vibe I was after.”

With a subtitle of “A PERPETUAL MOTION MACHINE,” this library is very unique with a sample set from a Style 23 harp, traditional Swedish nyckelharpa (or “keyed fiddle”), 2 Harmoniums, a bowed Glockenspiel and a set of Ocarinas.
The 5 instruments are presented as “Raw” presets as well as layered, textured and effected in various ways delivering “never-before-heard hybrids of sounds.“
Thanks to the collection of instruments, additional samples, and additional natural ambiences like chair squeak and floor board creaks, the libraries presets range from plucking to percussive, growing to airy, with a consistent dissonance to the output..
