Spitfire Audio Launches Phoenix: Hybrid Synth With BT

Spitfire Audio has launched Phoenix, a hybrid synthesizer developed with Grammy-nominated composer and technologist BT. The instrument is aimed at cinematic sound design and is built around six synthesis engines sharing a single signal path: spectral wavetables, FM, a sampler, 2OP FM transients, subharmonic generation and a complex noise oscillator. Spitfire Audio says a single patch can move from a composed theme to decomposed texture.
Each voice runs two independent synthesis chains, so detune, spectral modulation, envelope timing and phase warps can differ between the left and right channels. The phase warping section offers more than eighty modes across two serial slots, with depth modulatable per channel. The FM engine provides six operators and thirty-four algorithms, and any sample can serve as an operator. With eight-voice unison, one key press can stack 48 oscillators.
The sampler combines recordings from BT’s thirty-year private collection with selected Spitfire Audio sources, 40GB in total. Material includes fluttering strings, quarter-tone brass clusters, bowed textures, woodwinds, raucous guitars, dulcimer, cimbalom, autoharp, hand bells and a music box. A modal resynthesis function can rebuild a sampled struck object as an instrument that plays chromatically.
Phoenix also includes eight sequencers that double as envelopes, modulation based on the rhythmic language of BT’s patented StutterEdit, and 37 bespoke effects, each with its own interface, across twelve slots and three chains. It ships with over 500 presets, 16-voice full MPE, a real-time 3D render of the waveform and a modulation matrix with no slot limit. It runs in Spitfire Audio‘s dedicated plugin, which requires the Spitfire Audio App and an active internet connection. Phoenix joins Phobos and Polaris in BT the Collection, and owners of either product see a reduced price when signed in. Students and educators save 40%.
