Jazz Anthology Bass by Authentic Soundware is the closest I’ve come to a Kontakt upright that actually feels alive under my fingers. I’m a big fan of what Authentic Soundware are doing: they’re pushing envelopes with focused libraries (the Space Series & now the Jazz Anthology series) and diving deep into very specific instruments in a way most developers don’t. That attention to detail shows in every note.
First up, the interface is intuitive — I didn’t spend anytime reading the manual or searching for functionality. It was easy and natural to get realistic walking playback right from your keyboard thanks to the Walking Performance articulation. These are made up of 1000s of legato samples sourced from actual walking bass lines and this really elevate the library. But the real magic happens when you start programming the instrument utilizing all the articulations with shorts, bends, slides, grace notes and separate easy to access open string keys.
The default tone is woody, warm and resonant, the kind of sound that makes you think you’re standing next to a jazz bassist in a great room. Compared to other upright libraries I’ve used (many feel too generic or too clean), this delivers a jazz-first vision.
The enhanced playback mode with offset allows for even more nuance and natural timing during playback. The six mic positions and 20 mix presets give you everything from up-close club intimacy to, old timey mono to a polished and produced modern presence. The FX suite plus multi-mic signals will let users shape the jazz bass to sit perfectly in any mix or add character. The tools are there and they’re musical, not just technical.
