Checking Out: Deus Ex Machina: Fulgura by Cinematic Alpha

Cinematic Alpha follows up on the success of the original Deus Ex Machina with Fulgura, a percussion-focused library designed to elevate cinematic percussion to new heights. This new release blends 90% synthetic elements with 10% organic sources to create an expansive collection of signature loops, deep electronic pulses, and futuristic tension-building rhythms. In addition to loops, Fulgura also includes a range of percussion samples, allowing composers to build their own beats from scratch.

As with many of my reviews, I started by simply loading the library and experimenting with it to create a quick demo. Within 20 minutes, I had crafted a rough mockup incorporating Fulgura’s percussion alongside another orchestral library. The synth-organic blend of percussion quickly established its own character, fitting well into breaks and transitions in scoring—reminiscent of the way John Powell structures his compositions. The sound leans toward modern anime-inspired beats, a style I’m less familiar with, but one that many composers will find useful.

Combo Loops instrument

Navigating Fulgura’s interface is intuitive. The dual-area engine allows users to load two different loops and switch between them in real time using highlighted keys. The ability to seamlessly layer and swap loops significantly expands creative possibilities, offering a near-infinite combination of rhythmic textures. The library’s loops are available in both 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures, a rare and welcome feature.

Another notable aspect is the modulation control. The mod wheel manipulates the high-pass filter, allowing loops to morph dynamically, making them more expressive and adaptable in a mix. While the loops do not have fixed tempo information, they sync effortlessly to a DAW’s BPM, making it easy to integrate into any project.

Bonus Sound FX Insturment

Beyond the loop-based content, Fulgura includes a bonus NKI instrument featuring a collection of sound design elements and solo percussion instruments. With ten solo instrument options, users can build their own rhythms, further enhancing the versatility of the library.

The sonic character of Fulgura is heavily processed, featuring phasing, flanging, and various effects. While these effects contribute to its futuristic, hybrid aesthetic, I found myself dialing back what I could—particularly delay —helped reveal a cleaner, more defined loop for my mock up. This flexibility allows users to sculpt the sound to better fit their personal style and project needs.

Deus Ex Machina: Fulgura feels like a natural extension of the original Deus Ex Machina library, complementing its synthetic orchestral textures with a bold and unique take on hybrid percussion. The combination of loop-based elements, solo instruments, and sound design options makes it more than just a collection of pre-designed rhythms—it’s a tool that encourages experimentation.

That said, this library may be divisive among composers. Those drawn to its heavily processed, synthetic style will find it an exciting addition to their toolkit. While others may find the synthetic nature of this percussion libraries not to their particular tastes. Regardless, Fulgura stands out as an innovative instrument pushing the boundaries of synthetic percussion.
