Checking Out: Intimate Cello Iremia by Bunker Samples

Bunker Samples’ Intimate Cello Iremia follows in the footsteps of the developer’s previous Intimate Viola library, delivering a beautifully delicate solo cello with an emphasis on close microphone recordings. This library boasts airy sustains, organic swells, and evocative textures, all designed to capture the subtle imperfections that arise from soft, intimate playing. Inspired by a modern Scandinavian aesthetic, Intimate Cello delivers warmth and smoothness unlike any other sampled cello I’ve heard. Its so close up, its samples where recorded at such low volume and it brings a real human quality to the performance, which makes it stand out in an often overly polished world of virtual instruments.

One of the most striking aspects of Intimate Cello is its tone. The warmth and smoothness are among the finest I’ve heard in a sampled cello. There’s an undeniable richness to the sound, particularly in the quieter dynamics, where the imperfections of real performance—bow noise, slight pitch variations, breathy articulations—come through to create an intimately beautiful experience. These imperfections add a raw, human element that is often missing in virtual libraries, making it a powerful tool for composers who seek an emotional, organic sound in their work.

The microphone signal options in Intimate Cello is impressive. The 5 mic positions, including a mic inside the cello, extremely close mics, and room capture the finest details of the instrument, making it easy to blend into a variety of projects. Whether you’re scoring an intimate chamber piece or layering the cello into a larger orchestral arrangement, the clarity and depth of the recorded samples ensure it integrates seamlessly.

Overall, Intimate Cello Iremia is a standout in the Bunker Samples lineup. Its balance of delicacy and detail makes it an inspiring tool for composers looking to inject fresh textures into their music. Paired with the Intimate Viola, the two libraries promise to complement each other beautifully, offering even more creative possibilities. This library is truly refreshing, adding new flavors to compositions and sparking fresh ideas with every playthrough.
