Review: Unstrung by Fallout Music Group

Patterns section is fun and unique
All three Engines are easy to use while offering plenty of customization options
Tons of individual randomization options allowing you to randomize samples, sample categories, panning, and tuning individually
Hits instrument allows you to create isolated hits or layer with numerous whooshes
Risers and long (8 bars) and as creepy as I’ve ever heard
I wish the Patterns engine had a randomization feature for the step length
Unstrung is an FX style library aimed at the tension and horror genres with an interesting and creative take on hits, risers, and patterns. With the easy-to-use engine and 100’s of different sounds to choose from, you can combine and create interesting whooshes, risers, and hits using raw string manipulations and one-shot samples.

Unstrung Risers GUI
Unstrung gives you an easy way to create unique risers, hits, and rhythmic patterns from raw string manipulations, one-shots, and a few synth sound sources. The Risers and Hits section of Unstrung is a great way to create unique horror or tension risers, whooshes, and hits, but the rhythmic Patterns section is, for me, the star of the show.

Thoughts
Composers are constantly looking for time-saving devices. Often, time-saving tools come at a price – one often must settle for a cookie-cutter sound that is already recognizable in other tracks across the composing landscape. Fallout Music Group have created a good way to have your cake and eat it too in regard to risers, hits, and unique rhythmic patterns in the horror and tension genres. Unstrung gives you many different one-shots and samples that can be layered, combined, and randomized to create something unique for your tracks. Both the Risers and Hits instruments allow you to layer up to three different sound sources to create a unique sound that can instantly fit within your compositions.

Unstrung Patterns GUI
The layout of the engine for both is clear and easy to use while also being deep enough to give you some good customization possibilities. However, it’s the Patterns instrument that I find most fun to use. Patterns allows you to create unique rhythmic patterns using string manipulations like ricochets, plucks, and knocks. I found these patterns to offer instant inspiration. The customization options are aplenty here, with options for randomizing individual step samples, note lengths, tuning, and panning, while also providing global randomization options that can instantly create something fresh and new. There are a good number of snapshot presets for each of the three instruments (Hits, Risers, and Patterns) to get you started off on the right foot. Unstrung is a fun library and especially useful for creating instant tension in your tracks.
