Review: Poiesis Cello by Sonora Cinematic

Poiesis Cello gives us everything from fragile beauty to unsettling darkness, with its intimate and detailed exploration of cello textures. This is a library of real quality but at a very reasonable price.

Review: Poiesis Cello by Sonora Cinematic

Sonora Cinematic are a relatively new developer and this is their first foray into orchestral sampling. Poiesis Cello is the first of their textural solo string creations and it is a very fine introduction to the talents of Alessandro Mastroianni. It does seem over the past few years that stringed instruments are being pushed to far more experimental extremes, as composers and developers seek to find new orchestral delights. This library really goes for it with nearly 50 articulations to choose from that take us all the way from normale to grinding col legno, and from airy flautando to sul pont motions.

Thoughts

Main

When it comes to such raw and focussed sounds the particular instrument, player and the recording must be of the utmost quality and thankfully Sonora Cinematic really succeeded in that. Yo-Yo Ma’s own Moes & Moes cello in combination with the skills of Alan Black, principal cellist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, is a classy match. Likewise, the blend of mic options between a Neumann U87, AEA R84A Ribbon and Schoeps CMC/mk4 is beautifully nuanced.

Advanced

The final piece of the puzzle is getting the GUI right and again this is very well done. It’s simple, quick to use and effective. The only real grumble I have is the occasional tuning quirk, most apparent when mid-fade between two articulations. Hopefully this will be fixed in an update. There are other similar products out there that share the same excellence for a similar price, each with its own extra USP tagged on. For Poiesis Cello this would definitely be the shear amount of articulations on offer, the addition of shorts patches and also the three crossfade curve options.
