Petroglyph Stone Age Percussion from Soundiron

Petroglyph from Soundiron sells for $49.00 from Soundiron

Soundirons latest creation, Petroglyph, contains 100 sample sets of stone scraps, clicks, clacks and clinks created from sampling stone artifacts from pre-Columbian North American tribes including arrowheads, mortars, pestles, grindstones, bowls, axes and hammers. Petroglyph has been created with the crystal clear samples quality as we have come to expect from Soundiron.

What at first sounds like a sound effect set quickly turns into a unique percussive library with over 100 sound sets, effects and arpeggiator. I really love to use unique percussion in my scores and found that Petroglyph was fun to play, surprisingly more so than I expect once I started experimenting with ARP (Soundirons arpeggiator) and the included effects rack.

One of the reasons this percussive library is so easy to use as an instrument is that Soundiron have sampled the artifacts with 8-10 round robins for each velocity layer which ads to the realism when played back as a beat or performance. A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Peaslee of Soundiron as Petroglyph had just been released. He shared that the many of the artifacts sample for the library come from his families personal collection.

It is important to note that sound designers have access to all the samples as wav files. Petroglyph comes with unlocked samples that can be used in any software environment that supports regular uncompressed wavs.

Petroglyph is a deep sampled collection of primitive stone weapons and tools, with 100 recorded articulations. The library downloads as 305 MB library includes 2292 samples and 7 nki presets with a custom user interface for the full version of Kontakt 5.5 or higher.

The samples for the instrument were captured up close and in stereo in a dry studio environment and recorded with high-fidelity Neumann and Sound Devices hardware.

Petroglyph comes with 7 NKI instrument presets including 12 Click articulations, 17 Flam and bounce articulations,13 Hand and finger articulations, 33 Scrape, drag and grind articulations, 25 Striking articulations and a tonal “Tuned Percussion” articulations for melodic playing.

Petroglyph’s kontakt interface comes with attack, release, transient offset, dynamic swelling, filter type selection, resonant filter sweep and a robust Arpeggiator system that provides a full range of custom dynamic arpeggiation modes and step sequencer pattern creation options. There’s also a complete DSP effects rack, including convolution reverb with dozens of unique spaces, such as cathedrals, churches, halls, bunkers, garages, tunnels, chambers, rooms and plenty of otherworldly FX impulses to fully explore and endless variety of strange and unexpected sonic manipulations.

The instrument also comes with a Soundiron‘s ARP (Multi-mode Arpeggiation with step-sequencer) and a second panel with a multi-FX Rack panel which is great for sound design and creative manipulation. The effects include: Reverb with 70 different cathedrals, churches, chambers, rooms, halls and special effect impulses, EQ, filter, phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, amp & speaker simulation and more.

Petroglyph comes with unlocked samples that can be used in any software environment that supports regular uncompressed wav files.
