Thoughts

Olafur Arnalds Evolutions had gone right over my radar but I am very pleased to have a chance to dig in and check out this beautiful haunting library.  The library captures some of the exciting articulations of the string quartet – the articulations you normally won’t get in a sample library. Add these meticulously sampled performances to your track and you’re sure to have the listener fooled into thinking you scored with a group of live players.

Taking the instrument a step further Spitfire has incorporated this very large and expressive sample set into it’s Evo Grid engine. This offers composers literally trillions of combinations of sample playback across the keyboard and a very useful “random” function which brings up a number of different random curated sample sets.

I would loved to have seen the solo instruments include standard articulations as well as true legato. I know this takes the instrument in an entirely new direction, but if it was created that way with the same incredible recording quality I could have used them as my go-to solo string instruments.

My only other critique is that for the young “non-student” composer this library might be a  little pricey,  for professionals scoring for picture it’s just the cost of getting a unique and inspiring library created with Spitfire‘s magic ingredients. As it nearly stands alone in what it delivers as a library it’s hard to deduct points for the price alone.

With Evolutions, Arnalds, the Spitfire team and the collaborators including Viktor Orri Árnason and Sebastian Selke have built an intimate library that conjures an abundance of different emotions with just a few minor chords.
