Review: Mosaic Bass by Heavyocity

In the sample library world, Heavyocity is one of the first names that comes to mind when you hear the word “cinematic.” True to form, Heavyocity’s Mosaic Bass offers an excellent selection of high-quality presets and a deeply programmed Kontakt interface that makes for an instrument you can pull out of your toolkit time and time again. As should be expected from all Heavyocity offerings, Mosaic Bass is nothing less than a best-in-class instrument.

Review: Mosaic Bass by Heavyocity

To say that Heavyocity is one of the best sample library developers out there would be a massive understatement. Heavyocity continues to push the envelope of what a sample library can be. The Mosaic series is their most recent example. By taking simple sound sources (in this case synth basses) and pushing them through their deeply-programmed Mosaic engine, Heavyocity has created not only a great selection of snapshot presets, but a deep Kontakt instrument that can be used to create an infinite number of different sounds and timbres. The snapshots are arranged into two categories: Mellow and Aggressive.

Each of these categories has then been split into three snapshot folders: Playable, Rhythm, and Pads. I found the playable instruments to be the weakest section of presets within the engine, but I’m not completely surprised by that given the source material. However, the rhythms and pads are great, with the rhythms (as usual) being my favorite category. Heavyocity have a way of knowing how to create rhythmic presets that are instantly inspirational for me. The Mosaic engine builds each sound out of three selectable instrument layers that offer you full control over shaping the sound. Don’t like a layer? No problem – just select another from their great selection of sound sources. The controls for each layer far surpass mere volume and panning; they offer separate arpeggiators, filters, eq, envelopes, gates, delay, reverb, and more. The ability to have full control over the modulation of each parameter as well means the sound-shaping possibilities are innumerable. As with all Heavyocity instruments, I highly recommend you check this one out. I don’t know what the secret sauce is at Heavyocity HQ, but I’m glad they keep pouring it on the sample library world!
