Review Mix Checker by Audified

Within minutes of testing out Mix Checker I understood this tool could be invaluable. The price tag seems a little high if you think of this as a “speaker simulator”. Only a week after reviewing Mix Checker it is now a standard part of my workflow.

If I was going to write a How To mix with virtual instruments, utilizing reference monitors, car stereos and lap top computers would be on the list. With, Audified’s latest release, Mix Checker, you get several “virtual” reference monitors in a plug-in.

Mix Checker is a speaker and headphone simulation plugin that gives the user the ability to emulate listening through different devices from TVs, tablets, smartphones and more.

When I first got the material on the plugin I was skeptical as to the real value for me since I have some hi-end monitors as well as some NS10s, a sub and a laptop to check mixes on. After just a few minutes of using Mix Checker on a current project,  I understood it’s value. I was terrified when I first A/B’d my mixes and heard what the director of the film I am scoring might be hearing in the cues I am sending him. My mixes benefited greatly using Mix Checker I’ll be monitoring everything with it from now on.

MixChecker is straight forward. You have 2 main areas of control: Simulation & Compensation.

Compensation takes into account your listening environment allowing you to select whether you are listening through 5” or 8” speakers or headphones to help deliver a flat frequency response. Your signal output will adjust accordingly although Audified states that “high-quality studio monitor owners should simply select OFF”.

The Simulation lets you section one of the 12 consumer devices / reference monitors with easy to navigate icons. Simply select the device you want simulate and Mix Checker converts the signal to represent the eq curve and simulation of the speaker.

The BYPASS button turns off all processing.

That’s it. It is such a simple idea I can’t believe no one has put out a plugin like this sooner!

To create the plug-in the Audified captured the response from the 12 simulation speakers in “laboratory conditions”.

Since they had the above photo in some of the promo material I am guessing the “classic studio monitor” simulation is emulating the NS10 shown. Luckily I have a pair of NS10s and could A/B emulation of the NS10s using Mix Checker playback through my Genelec 8040As with that of playback through my actual NS10s.

What I found is that Mix Checker seems to be even less forgiving than my actual speakers. The simulation of NS10s through my Genelecs seemed to be almost a step or 2 past what my actual NS10s sounded like in the room. And that is the same feeling I got from many of the Simulation settings. This of course is not a deal breaker, as in the video review you can see I was very pleased to be able to get superior mixes by quickly checking the simulations of other listening devices without having to run out to the car or copy files to my iphone.

If you think of it in terms of what you are actually getting – a plugin with 12 speaker simulations – then the price tag seem high. I think it really comes down to what your time is worth. Only a week after reviewing Mix Checker and it is now a standard part of my workflow.
