Review: Maleventum 2
Mystery Box 1 + 2 by Silence and Other Sounds
Silence and Other Sounds have a reputation for creating great sounding instruments that are fantastic value for money.
In recent years, Silence and Other Sounds have produced some of the greatest boutique horror and sci-fi libraries realeased by an indy developer.
Featuring off-the-wall sampling and twisted sound design, for instrument-based effects and genuine moments of extreme horror, libraries such as Stringache, Pain Piano and Freaktion are unmatched in their genre. More recently, Silence and Other Sounds have added more playable and unique instruments in the guise of their horn collection, Maleventum.
Featuring playable horns, killer sound design and some MPE functionality, it is a great library. Today, we are taking a good look at Maleventum 2, with a focus to pre-Columbian ethnic flutes. As a bonus, we’ll be seeing what the two Mystery Boxes are all about too!
Malventum 2 and the two Mystery Boxes certainly uphold that reputation and then some. Malventum 2 takes some extremely rare Native American instruments and presents them in a variety of ways. From playable instruments with ornamentation, to SFX and the ability to further mould these sounds into drones and atmospheres, Malventum 2 is a crucial library for any horror or tension composers. That said, the flutes will also work for ambient and meditation cues under the right conditions.
The two Mystery Boxes are simply brilliant. The sound design is big, bold, brash and the controls are easy to use to get quick results. The key point is the sampling. It is clean, full of character and paves the way for a fantastic collection of sound design instruments. For $29, these Mystery Boxes are a steal!
