Review: Expeditions Cinematic & World Rhythms by Sample Logic

Expeditions Cinematic & World Rhythms is a massive assortment of (over a thousand) easily altered rhythmic patterns and world music loops taken from a broad pallet of musical influences.

Sample Logic’s Expeditions is the 3rd in a series of full Kontakt Loop instruments, which follows on the success of predecessors Rhythmology and Electro City. Expeditions is the result of collaborations with some of the most talented sound designers and composers in the industry including Black Octopus, Prime Loops, Loopmasters, ThaLoops and Sample Logic’s own creative team.
The resulting loops provide ethnic flavors and incredible flexibility across a broad variety of musical genres in one highly useful collection.

Thoughts

Imagine the impossible feat of having to score an entire animated series with only one loop tool. “Impossible!,” you say? Perhaps. Until you discover the expressive flexibility of Sample Logic’s Expeditions Cinematic & World Rhythms. From thunderous multi-layered, rhythmic drums loops to tonal instruments, this library screams for a chance to score an epic adventure across the globe, and like any worthy cinematic adventure story, there are far more riches to discover than just a handful of ethnic musical tropes.

With over a thousand loops at your fingertips, everything you need to achieve an incredibly varied soundtrack is here, arranged in tidy “construction kit” style packages, controlled by a clever Kontakt user-interface.

Quickly browse and select loop kits by “tags” or “favorites,” then, get right to work customizing each loop to suit your specific style, need or tempo. Inspiration abounds and browsing is streamlined.

The loops in Expeditions Cinematic & World Rhythms instantly conform to your project tempo and without artifacts! But, we’re only scratching the surface on the deep controls afforded you over each loop. Nearly every parameter is adjustable – giving you an incredible amount of flexibility. Transpose, slice, glitch, stutter and reverse loops with ease from the user-interface. Then after you’ve found your unique groove, pile on heaps of multi-layered effects chains to transform your creations even further.

The ubiquitous balalaika, sitar and tabla hand drum are there, carefully poised in construction kits made to emphasize their ethnic origins. But surprisingly, at least to me, is a very good collection of contemporary loops and sounds that transcend “world music” and land squarely in categories like EDM, IDM, House, and Chill. Take for example the kit titled “Krypto Science,” which could easily morph itself from genre to genre, simply by changing the tempo.

Not every kit is as malleable but each work to provide a very well-thought-out collection.

I found loops that could work for horror, mystery and intrigue… Think discotheques of Dubai or the beaches of Montserrat. Even the loop names are entertaining such as, “Kung Fu Pandas,” “Two Live Cruise” and “Sex On A Plane.”

One could say this library is skewed towards Action/Adventure but again, this is only the beginning as the Sample Logics’ loop customization engine becomes a musical well that you can return to again and again.

Navigating the library is made simple by the Kontakt user interface. Loops are arranged in “construction kit” style with 4 “variables” or instruments for each kit. Though each loop in the kits is meticulously matched to create a certain feel or musical passage, the interface allows you to change any loop or playback parameter right from the user interface. Want to re-sequence a drum pattern, reverse how it plays and glitch it up a bit? Everything is right at your fingertips and menus are relatively intuitive. I mean, if I can do it, you probably can, too.

Previewing the kits is fast and efficient. Clicking the small magnifying glass near the loop name launches a browser where loops are tagged by instrument and style. A user selectable “favorites” feature allows you to quickly tag your own set of loops for fast recall.
Each kit is mapped to your keyboard, starting with the full mix mapped to middle C, and the individual components mapped to the next 4 corresponding keys.

Note that the grouped keys pictured on the keyboard correspond to the full construction kit first, then the four variable elements or loops that comprise it. Near the letter A (top left) four separate pages are configurable to allow you to construct four variations of the loop pattern that are playable on the fly, making your loop creations more like true performances rather than simple repeating loops.

To access the effects parameters for each loop, simply click the large FX button located next to each loop in the kit browser. Once revealed, you can easily make adjustments to stutter, transpose, reverse or add and subtract effects like reverbs, delays and other processing. And finally, if all this control is simply too much bother, you can simply click the Random button (located in the default screen view) to randomize any kit within the collection.

These are individual loops designed for inspiration for building songs and underscores. I strongly recommend you investigate this collection fully to be sure it meets your needs. In-depth videos and loop demos can be found SampleLogic.com as well as additional details about this product.

Facts

The entire collection boasts over 1.000 loops which are accessible through a single NKI file resulting in a compressed download size of just 1.38 GB. A full, retail version of Kontakt 5.7 (or higher) is required to utilize these loops.
