Thoughts

One of the things that is so powerful about Omnisphere 2 is the sheer variety of factory sounds it offers. At 12,000+ total sounds the factory library should keep most of us busy for a very long time. However, while this is enough for many of us, the amount of customization on tap for those who dare look under the hood is vast. As a composer who essentially lives off the sounds of others, I am always thankful for those who take the time to figure out how to program new and creative patches. At its best, buying a new soundset for Omnisphere 2 can be like purchasing an entirely new library. That’s why I’m thankful for folks like Joseph Hollo who know not only what buttons to push and dials to turn in Omnisphere 2, but who also bring a sound aesthetic to their work in order to tame these sounds and assemble them into a coherent soundset.

Delight 2 Scenes is one product of such an effort. While the first Delight soundset for Omnisphere 2 focused on more lyrical and ethereal sounds and textures, Delight 2 Scenes is all about setting the right mood for film and other scenes. This results in everything from ambient drones and pads to plenty of sequences, leads and melodic arps. The idea here is that Delight 2 Scenes could be used to single-handedly provide both the rhythmical and melodic backbone to your tracks or scores.

I think this soundset largely succeeds in this endeavor. I was completely blown away by a number of the patches on offer here. The arps and Bpm sequences got me especially excited, and I found several of the basses and drones to be very good as well. As with most soundsets, there are highs and lows, but I found many of these sounds to be very good. There do seem to be some of the obligatory standard pads and leads here that feel like retreaded ground but given the innovation and usefulness of many patches I’m willing to largely overlook it. However, I do wish we could place a moratorium on so many of the warm and shimmering pads that we’ve all heard before in a hundred places. Sound designers take note!

I encourage you to check out the multis here. There are some real gems that include patches like “Ambient Echoes”, “Breath & Sweep”, and “Endless Faces.” There are only 16 multis on offer, but they are mostly very good. Overall, I find Delight 2 Scenes to be a creative and useful group of sounds that I am glad to add to my hard drive. The fantastic top quarter and really good top half of this library outweighs some of the standard fare that’s also included.
