Sonic Atoms are a new player in the world of soundsets and sample libraries, but if their future offerings are even in the same ballpark as Baltic Shimmers – COUNT ME IN! This has to be the best collection of drones and pads that has ever graced my instance of Omnisphere! Long, evolving, and stunningly beautiful, Baltic Shimmers is my new go-to soundset for pads and drones.

Review: Baltic Shimmers Omnisphere Edition by Sonic Atoms

Baltic Shimmers Omnisphere Edition is simply breath-takingly beautiful. These are the soundbeds that will take any score or ambient track to the next level. The quality of the soundsources, combined with detailed outboard processing, means these are not your usual pads, drones, or soundbeds. Baltic Shimmers is a stellar and unique offering that will make your dramatic score or ambient track sparkle.

Thoughts

Baltic Shimmers began life as a soundset for Halion (either Halion Sonic SE 3.4, Halion 6, or Halion Sonic 6). With Baltic Shimmers Omnisphere Edition, Sonic Atoms have brought this fantastic set of pads, drones, and “shimmers” to the Omnisphere platform, being specially edited and looped to fit within the Omnisphere ecosystem.

The first way in which Baltic Shimmers is unique among Omnisphere soundsets is that it comes with its own set of unique soundsources. Instead of being derived from Omnisphere’s excellent array of soundsources, Baltic Shimmers has been created from original recordings featuring long organic textures such as irregular electric cello tremolos, ukulele tremolos, or random notes from a glockenspiel. In many cases, these sounds were then combined with sea waves or seagulls to produce fluttering, evolving, patches. The combination of organic instruments and soundsources found in nature were then processed through outboard effects. Hours of recordings were sampled to extract the best textures to be processed and curated into Baltic Shimmers. According to Sonic Atoms, most of the samples were processed through tape and then recorded again digitally after being slowed down. This has led to sounds that are long and evolving, making perfect soundbeds for dramatic scores or ambient tracks.

I had to keep a spreadsheet beside me while playing through this soundset just to ensure I could remember my favorite patches – which ended up as a really long list!

While most of these patches would fit perfectly into a reflective score or ambient track, there are several mysterious and dark sounds that would be right at home in a horror track or score. One of my favorite features in a number of these sounds was the presence of air – it’s hard to explain, but the air in some of these sounds is just so beautiful. The modwheel contributes to the already evolving nature of these sounds, sometimes introducing surprising features such as ice breaking or detuned sounds. The soundset has been divided into three categories: drones, pads, and shimmers, but I think you could appropriately label these as “soundbeds” and call it a day.

Baltic Shimmers is simply luscious and beautiful. This is by far the best set of ambient soundbeds I have heard in Omnisphere and has become a go-to for me in scoring, creating dramatic tension, and in ambient tracks. I won’t say this often, but if you love pads and ambient soundbeds, I personally think this one is a must. I can’t wait to see what Sonic Atoms comes up with next!
