Review: Aggressive Trailer Sounds Vol. 1 (Omnisphere 2.6) by Visceral Instruments

Aggressive Trailer Sounds Vol. 1 is a soundbank for Omnisphere 2.6, and it’s the first release from developer Visceral Instruments. The company was formed by composers/artists Devin Powers and Dan Brown Jr., whose combined experience in their respective fields (sound design/engineering and composing) was put to good use with creating a cutting edge set of sounds for modern composers.

Thoughts

Aggressive Trailer Sounds Vol. 1 (ATS for short from now on) features a nice variety of preset categories, all featuring incredible and cutting edge sounds which will feel right at home in any trailer composer’s arsenal. In general, these sounds are massive, aggressive, and very intense, the hits and braams especially seem to make my speakers beg for mercy. Each sound is crafted with chaotic precision and complexity, meaning nothing really sounds generic or boring, constantly delivering cutting edge and provocative sounds.

The presets are categorized as follows :
-Barbaric Braams
-Brutal Bowed
-Deathly Drops
-Disruptive Downers
-Huge Hits
-Pining Trailer Pianos
-Raging Risers
-Slaying Signature Sounds
-Terrifying Transitions
-Wrathful Whooses

Now, if the naming conventions of the categories didn’t already give it away, there is nothing subtle or soft about any of these sounds. You won’t find any ambient or ethereal pads here, but let’s be honest, you don’t purchase a bank called Aggressive Trailer Sounds and expect subtle beauty within! The sounds will be a perfect fit for trailers, of course, but also any genre of intense cinematic music as well: action, thrillers, horror, and the like. Starting with the Barbaric Braams, we are treated, of course, to some of the most gargantuan and massive brassy, synth-y, drone-y braams you can get your hands on. These sounds are as popular as ever today, and the braams here are great out of the box, but also surprisingly complex, a feature you will find with almost all of the sounds contained in ATS. There are many layers at play here, and you can solo or mute any of the layers, as well as swapping out sound sources (thanks to the brilliant engine of Omnisphere 2.6). I’d like to note that with many sample libraries in this category, you often don’t get such a deep level of control and customization over the sounds included, so it’s a really nice feature and a sound designers dream. Not only do you have great presets right out of the box, you also have total control and can tweak to your hearts content and create truly unique sounds using the sound sources provided.

Next we have the Brutal Bowed category, which probably includes some of the most organic material out of this collection. Isolating the different layers in some of the presets, you are presented with sounds ranging from bowed cellos and other stringed instruments, all the way to cymbals, toms, springs, and even the sound of scraped tile. I enjoyed really diving in here, and exploring the origin of the presets, since everything is so well designed and processed, you often have no idea what the sound actually started out as. I personally love bowed sounds, so I really enjoyed this category, from searing, screeching resonance to deep, dark moans.

Deathly Drops and Disruptive Downers are a bit too similar, and while they sound great overall, I would have liked more of them to really hit in the sub-bass frequencies, but they are very good nonetheless. Huge Hits gives you plenty of room-shaking slams and massive percussive hits, a must have for those big impact moments in trailers, they offer a great selection of organic source material and fantastic processing. Pining Piano Trailers was probably my least favorite category. That doesn’t mean it was bad, but the presets weren’t exactly my cup of tea, and some of them sounded overly similar. That being said, they are still perfectly usable, and remember you can swap out sound sources if you aren’t a fan of the initial presets.

The Raging Risers are fantastic, offering tension building rises which bring the intensity up to a fever pitch. Slaying Signature sounds seems to be a cornucopia of categories, often combining a percussive hit or boom with an intense tonal element as well. They are very recognizable and certainly leave their “signature” mark on whichever track you use them in.

Terrifying Transitions offer a variety of stingers and transitional sounds that perfectly shift your track from one stage to the next, and Wrathful Whooshes serve a similar purpose, often with a noticeable rise and fall in frequency accompanied by white noise to give it that “whoosh” effect.

Everything included here is very well presented and crafted, and it’s obvious the developers know what they are doing and took their time to painstakingly craft these sounds. It’s a nice change from similar sample libraries (Kontakt, etc) which focus on trailer sounds, simply due to the amazing Omnisphere engine and how deeply you can customize and really tweak the sounds provided. Not only do you have great presets, you also have a ton of custom sound sources created for this soundbank which you can use to create your own custom trailer sounds! I look forward to future releases from Visceral Instruments, as this was a fantastic first release from this exciting company.
