Review: Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings by Spitfire Audio

by

With Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings, Spitfire Audio has captured both the intimate sound of a string quintet and the crisp, detailed sound of Abbey Road Studio Two. Including some of the best short articulations available today, beautiful longs, and both modern and vintage mixes, Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings is one of my favorite Spitfire Audio libraries to date.

Review: Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings by Spitfire

Audio

Continuing with the Abbey Road sound (this time from Studio Two), Spitfire Audio has brought something completely new and yet fully recognizable to the table with Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings. Dry and crisp, the sound of Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings is the string sound you’ve heard many, many times before – the exposed, in-your-face string quintet that many of us have come to know and love.

Thoughts

To say I’m impressed with Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings would be a gross understatement. I have been looking for a virtual string quintet/quartet library for literally years now and have never been satisfied with what I’ve found…until now. Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings sounds fantastic. The short articulations are probably the best I’ve ever heard in any library. They are crisp, clean, detailed, and in your face. The longs are beautiful and convincing while remaining intimate and up close. However, with the microphone placement possibilities (Professional only) or some good reverb, these shorts can sit in any mix with ease. Dry libraries like this always have the advantage of easily blending into your mix, but they normally sound stale and lack an organic feel. This isn’t at all true with Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings; these strings sound alive and detailed and can completely stand on their own. Solo strings are probably the hardest instrument to sample. Normally, exposed solo strings end up sounding fake: the longs sound like a synth pad, while the shorts sound artificial and synthesized. This isn’t at all true with Abbey Road Two – these strings sound real, organic, and full of energy and life. The Core edition comes with everything most composers will need – almost every articulation is there, and two great mixes are on offer (one modern mix + the vintage Abbey Road Studio two signal mix – including the vintage REDD desk, parallel compression from the RS124, and flowing through the J37 tape machine). The Professional edition provides an additional modern and vintage mix each and comes with 8 additional microphone positions (featuring an array of vintage and modern microphones). In addition, the Professional edition also includes the portamento legato articulation. Is it enough to justify the price difference between the two editions? Well, each composer must decide that for themselves, but I feel most users would be happy with the Core edition. Don’t get me wrong, the Professional edition’s additional microphone positions are fantastic, but it does come at a cost – the Professional edition is $200 more and 250GB larger. Whether you consider investing in the Core or Professional edition, Abbey Road Two Iconic Strings is a library unlike any I’ve heard before; it feels real and alive and sounds organic, clean, and detailed. This library is simply fantastic!
