First Look: Vienna Smart Orchestra by Vienna Symphonic Library

by

Vienna Smart Orchestra delivers plenty of bang for your buck with a fantastic sounding sample set and a great collection of ensemble instruments equally suited for sketching or scoring. I have only scratched the surface of the Vienna Smart Orchestra, but it has already won me over as my new go-to orchestral sketching tool.

First Look: Vienna Smart Orchestra by Vienna Symphonic Library

When I heard the first demos for this new library from Vienna I was so excited to learn more. It wasn’t until I saw the price tag that I was all out shocked at what a value this library could be. But of course, I had to reserve judgment until I got a chance to dig into Vienna Smart Orchestra and see just what the functionality and workflow had to offer.

The big questions I had going into this first look video were:

Could this be my new go-to orchestral sketching tool?
How usable was the Vienna Synchron Player in my day to day workflow?

In the video above, I share my first look of sitting down with the Vienna Smart Orchestra. I start to explore the instrument and hope to answer these questions.

Of course, there is so much more than the instrument has to offer including controls for room sound, effects controls, routing, and section mic mixer controls that I don’t even get into (see official videos below for all the details).

Vienna Smart Orchestra contains a collection of individual sections with strings, woodwinds, brass, mallets as well as separate soloists with violins, flute, oboe, clarinet and trumpet, horn.

Articulation types in the library include short notes, short notes + pizzicato with long notes delivered with normal, fortissimo, pianissimo and tremolo, plus all the longs (except pianissimo) also include an additional articualtion with marcato attack.

The Vienna Smart Orchestra comes with a selection of pre-configured presets that seem to be a great way to jump right into working with the collection. The main orchestral presets include full orchestra + percussion and also a preset with limited or no bass instruments.

The Vienna Smart Orchestra also comes with a collection of FX Presets. The FX Presets of the library come  in 4 categories of Pads, Plucks, Leads, and Processed Percussion

From a first look alone I am confident in saying Vienna Smart Orchestra delivers plenty of bang for your buck. The sample set sounds fantastic and I think this library will be equally suited for sketching or finished scoring.

I have only scratched the surface of the Vienna Smart Orchestra, but it has already won me over. I will be using Vienna Smart Orchestra as my go-to orchestral sketching tool because of it’s great sound and ease of use. Of course, I’ll be spending more time with the instrument when I come up for air after my current scoring project and see if I can’t dive into all the details to share in a review of the library with some playback examples.
