First Look: Orchestral Swarm by Spitfire Audio

by

With a range of orchestral pointillistic effects, Spitfire Audio’s Orchestral Swam bucks the trend of aleatoric sample sets and offers up an expressive instrument users can control to sculpt unique, dynamic performances. A must-hear for anyone working on pro-level, creative underscore.

First Look: Orchestral Swarm by Spitfire Audio

In this First Look of Orchestral Swarm by Spitfire Audio, I take a look at what this exciting and unique orchestral instrument has to offer.

The library comes with 7 main Kontakt instruments with 3 instruments for Brass (Bones and Tubas, Horns & Brass).

Two Kontakt instruments from the string samples (Strings High & Strings Low).

As well as both High and Low Woodwind instruments.

Each of the articulations are also broken out into their own instruments in the Advanced folder.

Overall I really love the sound and performance opportunities that Orch Swarm offers. For those of us creating underscore Orchestral Swarm offers a very exciting new sample set. And with it’s clever, yet simple interface, it offers composers the opportunity to add some expression and movement thanks to the Variation, Expression, and Dynamics controls on the front of the interface.  This ability to sculpt and adjust is what makes an otherwise aleatoric sample set work as an instrument.

Standouts for me are the Whisper articulations across all the sections although there is something magical happening with the High Woodwind articulation and playability.  The only critique I had when first approaching the library is the lack of “shorts” for the Low Woodwinds. Shorts are featured throughout the entire rest of the library. It is a shame that Shorts are not included in the Low Woodwinds as the combination of the Low Woodwind sample set and Long/Short Reverb controls just sound fantastic.
