First Look: Ólafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions by Spitfire Audio

With O.A.’s Chamber Evolutions, Spitfire Audio delivers another beautifully sampled library that can instantly supply the complex textures of a small string ensemble that is impossible to get from a multi-sampled instrument. I can see how this library is going to be especially useful for those scoring to picture who need to work quickly and add depth and expression to their work.

First Look: Olafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions by Spitfire Audio
Few modern composers have been pushing boundaries in their music for media the way that Ólafur Arnalds has. Utilizing 20th-century techniques in his scores for such shows as Broadchurch to placements for major motion picture soundtracks like the Hunger Games or Taken composer Ólafur Arnalds has made a name for himself.

It is always a thrill to see a developer team up with a composer of this caliber to create toolkits as sample libraries for music makers. With Ólafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions, Spitfire Audio deliver the third collaboration with Arnalds this time with a focus on chamber string textures and timbres.

Ólafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions “Waves” nki interface
In this first look video, I capture my un-boxing and play through the presets to hear what the library has to offer. I spend a little time to showcase the Evo Grid system and take a listen to the articulations included in the nki’s. I will be sure to include all the official demos and videos from Spitfire Audio below for you to check out the walk-throughs and tutorials as I found the interview with Arnalds to be insightful and inspiring.
Ovall all, the library sounds beautiful out of the box and delivering deeply expressive textures right controlled from just a couple of your fingers on the keyboard. The Evo Grid engine really shines with this set of samples giving you a wide range of emotions with so many options for customization. And with the engines randomization options and 4 microphone positions, I am confident no two composers will use the library in quite the same way.
If I had any immediate critic of the library it is that the Time-Machine (tempo sync’d) “Wave” nkis included seem a little limited offering up only whole notes and quarter notes (no half or eighth notes).
As with many of the developer’s Evo Grid libraries I have had the opportunity to work with, this is a specialty instrument which may not be perfect for all composers. The sample set is unique, intimate and could add some breath and texture to many a composer’s work, but, I have personally have found the Evo Grid engine excels for scoring open sections to picture where the director says “fill this space but don’t say too much with the music” and for that this library is worth its 19.43GB weight in gold!
