First Look: Mysteria by Native Instruments

Although aleatoric libraries have a limit on what they can be used for, Mysteria will be a great addition for any composer looking for a fresh instrument for scoring tension, suspense, horror and thrillers.

Mysteria sells for $299.00 from Native Instruments

Mysteria was produced in collaboration with Galaxy Instruments who most of us will know from their other collabs with NI (UNA CORDA, RISE & HIT, NOIRE, THE GIANT, THRILL). Owners of “Thrill” will see a similar style of interacting with the library. The obvious difference is Mysteria’s unique pool of specially recorded choirs samples.

I’m very pleased to see the developer invest in creating this kind of library. It’s obvious it will have a more limited audience, than say a beat machine, being a tool for professional composers and sound designers.

Mysteria presets can be accessed using the traditional snapshot preset pull-down menu as well as with a well-designed browser allowing for sorting by tags.

The well-designed browser makes it easy to find a starting point with presets easily searchable by tags.

And for those looking for something completely random, there is a randomized feature which provides tags for finding just the right layers with a “roll of the dice”

Mysteria’s has a very unique way of generating swells, transformations and risers with a set of cluster controls and the Cluster Voicing Tree.

Mysteria comes with a set of creative FX including Mod FX, Reverb and Replika, a unique delay effect.

There is nothing quite like samples of the human voice and for the library Native /Galaxy have done an excellent job in capturing not only different size groups of performances but also a wide range of performances. Just like the promotional video promises, the sample-set is diverse and ranges from “melancholic to aggressive to dreamy to desperate to intimate to epic” all thanks to the combination of the sample set with a set of very clever FX controls.

Facts

Mysteria downloads as 29.9 GB and is a hybrid choral instrument.
The library contains a with a wide range of samples “never before captured for a virtual instrument” from sessions with 3 Different Choirs including am “Epic Choir” of 48 Voices *24 Male & Female Recorded Separately), a 12 Person Chamber Choir and a Quartet.

The hybrid engine allows you to load in sounds in the 4 different sound banks and morph between the samples with an X-Y controller.
