Detailed and transparent, LA Modern Percussion presents a new level in sophistication with a wonderful sample set delivering the unique character of the Eastwood Scoring Stage. Far more flexible than I expected, this library’s massive collection of percussion offers a whole new dimension, power and nuance to composers working on scores and trailer tracks.

Just when you thought nothing new could be done with cinematic percussion Audio Ollie and Performance samples team up with famed engineer Alan Meyerson to break new ground. The team took to the Warner Bros Eastwood Scoring Stage to capture over 100 instruments with Meyerson’s private microphone collection and expertise.

Instruments include a wide range of Microphone selections

My main thoughts while checking out the library for the first time was just how different this library is from other percussion libraries. LA Modern Percussion contains a raw and authentic sample set yet comes with plenty of controls to sculpt and shape the tone inside the instrument. With the EQ, Compression, and Saturation in the Kontakt instruments, I found the playback to be detailed and transparent and far more flexible than I expected.

A couple of important notes here about the library are that this won’t completely replace your true “orchestral” library. The instrument doesn’t come with timpani and there is only one piatti cymbal instrument.

LA Modern Percussion comes with a huge selection of Kontakt Multis.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the developer has consciously delivered the library with ALL of the room tone in the tail of the sample playback. When I was playing back the instruments there were times when this would cause a noticeable build-up and odd rumble at the end of the performance or hit. This is not a bug, but the culmination of the room tone adding up. Watch the official walkthrough video (below) as the developer has details on how to remove the room tone build up with the ADSR controls in the instrument.

LA Modern Percussion allows users to save/load mixer presets and comes with a number of presets that show off the range of sculpting playback inside the instrument.

What stands out in this instrument right away is the clarity and space that has been captured. Ala the Zimmer-style of scoring percussion, the library seems immediately useful for cinematic tracks with the nuance of the amazing room space in the stereo spectrum all while offering several microphone options to make your own unique mixes.

With LA Modern Percussion, Audio Ollie has succeeded on their promise of delivering contemporary percussion with very low CPU usage and a tiny memory footprint. All big pros of this library right out of the gate.

In the video above, I share my first look at the library, checking out the patches and tweaking some of the included controls to see what LA Modern Percussion sounds like right out of the box.

We will have a full written review of the library out in the next couple weeks so check back to learn more from one of our contributors who is spending more time learning about the instrument to share their thoughts with you.
