Thoughts

Itasca: Legato Violins from Crocus Soundware is a really great concept: instead of offering the standard legato variations we’re all familiar with (such as slurred, portamento, etc.), this library takes a different approach by sampling legato transitions in multiple articulations and styles. This means you have true legato for not just normal notes, but for tremolo, Sul pont, harmonics, trills, ricochets, and more. Not only that, but they’ve sampled multiple variations for attacks (9 variations) and releases (8 variations), far more than most libraries I’ve seen. For instance, if you want a slow, soft attack, or a sharp, glancing attack, or even a slow, bouncing ricochet attack, you can do it all with this library. Same goes for the releases: single or double-accented releases, decrescendos, and more. This opens up a ton of possibilities and adds realism and nuance that was really impressive while playing. I especially loved the slow glissando legato transitions, the trills and tremolo legatos, and the fantastic ricochet articulations.

They include an entire separate instrument for polyphonic sustains as well, which are really beautiful and emotive. Full of texture with a nice, open sound.

This library is recorded very closely with one mic position, which might limit its use for some, but it fits in really well with the overall philosophy and style of the library. All-in-all, it’s a really great choice for those seeking something more unique and differing from the standard orchestral violin library. I did find the interface a bit too cryptic and confusing, but a quick read of the manual will solve this (I’d definitely appreciate some more info via text or info buttons on the GUI, however)
