First Look: Hyperion String Elements by Soundiron

Hyperion Strings Elements is a Kontakt Player Instrument compatible with the full & FREE versions of Kontakt.

Hyperion Strings Elements takes a big step forward from the Micro edition adding new articulations with even more mapping and control flexibility. This chamber string orchestral library was sampled from 8 Violins, 6 Violas, 5 Cellos and 4 Double Basses recorded in sections and close-mic’d on a dry soundstage at Berkeley’s Fantasy Studios.

Hyperion Strings Elements comes with NKI presets for playing the full string ensemble, as well as section presets for both master and true legato. Hyperion Strings is evolving to be a flexible heavyweight in the string category, but won’t leave your wallet light.

I’ll get my biggest critique out of the way up front and say that I don’t love the sound that the library defaults to when you load it up. But, thanks to the “Stage Placement” tools and great sounding included Impulses and effects there are infinite possibilities to how playback of these studio chamber strings can sound. Ranging from a delicate intimate sound, a full lush tone with a concert hall tail and even taking playback way-out with saturation, compression and other effects.

Hyperion Strings allows users to “Position” sections on a virtual stage with an easy click-and-drag of the mouse.

The big update from the Micro edition to the Elements is the addition of some common articulations and a slew of dynamic specific articulations. Each section comes with fingered and gliss true legato with vibrato and non-vibrato sustains, tremolo and several wonderful dynamic expressions performances such as crescendos, decrescendos, sforzandos and swells. Thes Expression articulations delivered with different dynamics and lengths with speed controls and options to tempo-synced to your DAW.

Elements Expands on the Articulations available for Hyperion Strings with more dynamic layers

The included sustains samples allow dynamic range from p, mƒ to ƒ and are available in both vibrato and non-vibrato selections. Elements expands on what the Micro version delivered with even more short articulations including time mapped “8th staccatos”, short staccatos, spiccatos, pizzicatos, Bartok pizzicatos, and col legno all with loose and tight variations.

The Ensemble tab allows users to control the distribution of each string section across the keyboard.

With the extended dynamic articulations of the library, the Arpeggiator seems to be even more expressive and becomes a real tool for both inspirations as well as quickly creating rhythmic performances. The “Humanize” controls really can add wonders from taking your arpeggiator performances from a little too robotic to natural and groovy all the way to “just too much interpretation” when cranked all the way up.

The included Arpeggio sequencers allows for simple control for creating rhythms from notes or chords.

In the first look video above, I wanted to see how the Elements version of Hyperion Strings was expanded from the original Micro release. In short, elements expand the articulations available and the upgrade from Hyperion Strings Micro is highly recommended as the cost is so little and the expansions will add a lot of flexibility to your arsenal.

At the risk of repeating myself, Hyperion Strings Elements is a very inexpensive way to get into a flexible string library at a very affordable price with plenty of “Bang for your Buck”.
