First Look: Hip Hop Creator by Realitone

Hip Hop Creator main page GUI.

Two years in the making, Realitone’s Hip Hop Creator has been released with some very impressive functionality and a massive and surprisingly diverse sample set.

Realitone’s Mike Greene utilized his virtual instruments development experience and combined that with his work producing hip hop records to see the instrument come to life.

“I may not look like it, but I used to produce hip hop records. I’ve worked with ALT, Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, Kid Frost and House of Pain in my studio.”
– Realitone’s Mike Greene

The culmination is a focused, specialized Hip Hop instrument for Kontakt whos engine shows promise to be a trendsetter in how we work with virtual instruments.

Hip Hop Creator has a massive sample set going so much further than a drum sequencer with vocal, keys, brass, stabs samples and a ton of playable patches to produce complete tracks in the genre.

Listening through the sample playback might be enough to impress me but the real power of the instrument lies in it’s pattern controls and complexity slider that make this Kontakt instrument so easy to work with.

The library is built as a sample player with an internal sequencer with 16 separate modules. The modules are divided up into 2 different section. One on the left side for drums and percussion and one on the right side for melodic and one shot specialty samples like vocals, synths, keyboards, brass and more.

Hip Hop Creator comes with dozens of Patter Presets.

Each of the instrument’s modules allows users to select source samples that can be played back via the keyboard or triggered in sequence with one of the dozens of sequence patterns. And then we get to Artificial Intelligence.

Hip Hop creator contains a Complexity Slider that adds a new dimension of AI to the instrument. Each of the modules has a Complexity Slider and there is also a Master Complexity slider that affects all modules. The complexity sliders will increase or decrease the intricacy and subdivisions of the sequence playback.

Sequence playback is indicated with colored visual representation changes to reflect the more sparse or denser the sequence gets while changing the complexity slider.

The complexity concept was also seen in Realitone’s Realidrums (see the SLR review here). Although it was for a percussion only instrument the underlying programming made the instrument really stand out.

With the release of Hip Hop Creator, Realitone has harnessed the power of their Complexity Slider into more than just percussion and shown promise and potential for how this kind of AI in Kontakt could be used for a massive assortment of other instruments and genres.

Of note on the instrument is the ability to MIDI-drag to your daw from the library. While I see the big strength in Hip Hop Creator being the ease of quickly programming and developing an entire track, the Midi-Drag will be especially useful for those of us who need to get in and tweak out performances for more detailed composition.

This write-up just scratches the surface of the functionality of what Hip Hop Creator contains. In the video above, I share checking out the instrument for the first time and play through a large selection of the presets.  Overall the instrument is very intuitive and the complexity sliders really make this a breeze to quickly create entire tracks in the genre.

If you are looking for an all-in-one Hip Hop workstation . . .  your dreams just may have been fulfilled with this release.
