First Look: Emotional Violin by Best Service

Harmonic Subtones made a big splash with the first library in the series (Emotional Cello). This time the developer has released a new solo string instrument, four years in the making: Emotional Violin.

For the Emotional series, Harmonic Subtones is using a unique sampling technique referred to as “Contextual Sampling”. Rather than painstakingly sampling an instrument with each and every articulation and variation as with traditional sample recording for instruments, the contextual; sampling technique samples a variety of different instruments in various ways including performances and then builds the instrument around the massive sample sets.

In this first look, I take a tour and listen to the instrument to see what the library is like right out of the box.

Emotional Violin downloads as 6.89 GB and is a sample set from solo violin sessions recorded at the Mastermix Studio near Munich.

For the library, the developer has sampled the instruments with close mic’d hi-end microphones for a total of over 100 articulations including sustains, shorts with up 9 round robins, to trills and exotic effects.

The library contains 3 Master Patches with Keyswitching for articulation changes with all sustain articulations of the instrument delivering with True Legato with four different legato transitions which are triggered via velocity.

The library also comes with a 3-Band EQ and Sordino controls as well as convolution based presets for “Timbre Impulses)” that allow for manipulation of the characterful of the violin sound. The library also includes separate room & reverb convolution presets
