First Look: Cue Builders Cinematic Rhythms by Red Room Audio
Red Room Audio is back with a first in a series of libraries that makes HUGE leaps in improving playback, flexibility, and control for construction kits/loops in Kontakt. For the first in the “Cue Builders” series the developer has released “Cue Builders Cinematic Rhythms”, a massive (16 GB 19,000 samples) delivered as multi-stem world and epic percussion loops.
When I first saw the teaser for the library I was honestly underwhelmed. I just wasn’t sure how this percussion loop library would be something I wanted to use in my own work. Loops libraries tend to have drastic tempo restrictions and little room for control. But after diving into the walkthrough video and checking out the library for myself I have to say the innovations that were released with this Kontakt instrument have me excited about the future of loop/construction kits and performance-based libraries!
The library was envisioned from Red Room Audio lead, Dickie Chapin, needing for a Cue Builder in his own music production arsenal. Just a peek through the walkthrough video and I knew the advances in programming made for the engine would be a game-changer. Of course, it sounds great too. After Red Room Audio‘s SAGA – multi sampled epic percussion library, there was no doubt the developer could deliver an epic/world percussion instrument with a high quality of audio playback.
But what makes this Kontakt engine a game-shaker? The library delivers a huge collection of performances as stems. This allows for sculpting and building your own tracks from the performances by adding/subtracting layers.
The library comes with multiple Kontakt presets that cover different time signatures. All in, Cue Builders Cinematic Rhythms includes 6 Time Signature focused Kontakt presets for both the World and Epic percussion instruments. The library comes with 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8 and 12/8 feel multi-stem performances. And, the library has flexibility so you can work in even odder time signatures!
The library also comes with the ability to edit the start and endpoints of the loops. There are dozens of performances (some with additional variations) and the instrument is set up for users to quickly add stems that align perfectly with the other stems, on the fly with keyswitches.
The pièce de ré·sis·tance (or icing on the cake if you are feeling like dessert) is the library’s tempo selection buttons. This allows you to choose a tempo range for your loops to playback from your DAW. Tempo selection trigger entirely different sample sets with 4 speeds recorded and captured for the library for realistic tempo-syncing. This ensures playback will be of the highest quality without dreaded artifacts or digital noise that occur when manipulating most loops/performances beyond their original recorded tempo.
I’m thrilled with what Cinematic Rhythms has to offer and know this is going to be an indispensable tool for those who need epic percussion on a time crunch!
There are some limitations as the library only allows for close and hall mic controls. That said, I found that adjusting the stereo width controls, as well as the 2 mic positions and EQ adjustments inside the instrument, delivered a very wide range of possibilities. I’m sure I could get even more utilizing my own premium IR/reverb plugins, compression and parametric EQ.
I honestly think Red Room Audio has built a bridge with the engines innovation’s bridging the chasm between professional composers and loop/performance libraries in a way that has not been attempted. I for one, can’t wait to see what the next Cue Builders library will have in store for us!
