First Look: Chris Hein Ensemble Strings

by

Chris Hein is back with a ‘Designed’ String Ensemble that comes with every bit of the control we have come to expect from the developer. CH Ensemble Strings delivers a delightfully expressive collection of instruments and there is no shortage of voices with the libraries 32 different articulations!

First Look: Chris Hein Ensemble Strings

In this First Look Video of Chris Hein’s new Ensemble Strings, I play through a good selection of the NKIs to get a feel for what the library has to offer.

This ‘Designed’ take on a String Ensemble is quite different than anything I have used thus far. In lew of recording the full sections and multiplayer in an ensemble all in the same room, Chris Hein has compiled a Kontakt Player sample library from a sample set of over 120,000 individual recordings of violins, cellos and double basses.

Chris Hein has compiled the library from a sample set of over 120,000 individual recordings of violins, cellos and double basses.

Each sample has been adjusted with care for tuning and adjustments for timing and panning all being carefully curated for every note. The official page notes that “these files were mixed with other recordings to build up an ensemble.” A little vague n the details of what the other recordings or the original sample set is from but from the looks of it I am betting the base of this library is from samples from Chris Hein’s Solo String collection (see SLR review of Chris Hein Solo Strings here)

One big benefit of approaching an ensemble library in this way is control. For example, Chris Hein was able to craft some articulations, such as pizzicato or col legno, and supply users with ‘loose’ and ‘tight’ variations to choose from.

That control is also evident in the delivery of both ‘Full’ & ‘Small’ ensembles patches as the library comes with separate Violins, Violas, Celli and Bass patches as well as separate High, Mid and Low String Patches.

As seen with Chris Hein’s Solo Strings, the stagaring 32 different articulations included is a programmer’s delight. With several Sustains, Vibrato, Flautando, Ponticello, Trills, 4 Shorts, 4 Spiccato, Effects, Runs, Tight & Loose Pizzicato and Col Legno articulations I mentioned earlier this library has no shortage of options for selecting just the right sound for expressing your musical idea.

The library comes with 2 different IRs, one for Body and one for Room. Stripping back playback to not use either of these IRs the library did leave something to be desired. I found that by just utilizing the Body IRs (22 different options) you could get some very realistic sounds from playback. The Room IRs are varied and will work for a broad range of performance intentions although in my work, I will first be tempted to utilize a premier reverb plugin to try placing all of my orchestral instruments in the same ‘Room’.

Articulations Presets Panel

Even in a first look video post I can’t help but mention the amount of controls in this library has.

The big PRO for me is that Chris Hein Ensemble Strings delivers a delightfully expressive collection of instruments and there is no shortage of voices with the libraries 32 different articulations!
