Thoughts

The Vienna Symphonic Library has released four new Brass Packs in their Big Bang Orchestra series.

The new releases include Hercules, a low brass library, Izar, a low brass clusters library, Jupiter a French Horns library and Kopernikus a Trumpet library.

The new brass packs continue the Big Bang Orchestra tradition of capturing ensembles in the famous Synchron Stage Vienna.

I previously shared a first look video of Big Bang Orchestra: Hercules and was excited to hear how VSL had delivered the instruments with a great dynamic range with an extra fortississimo layer to get those bold and brassy sounds in playback.

For the Brass Packs VSL delivered the instruments with a wide range of articulations including Longs, Shorts, Legatos, Glissandos, Swells, Flutter Tonguing, Trills, Marcatos, several dynamic articulations (sfz, sffz, various crescendos and decrescendos), & more all accessible inside the developers Syncron Player.

Vienna considers the Big Bang Orchestra a “starter edition” but from the extensive articulations that are included in these Brass Packs you wouldn’t know it.

One of the things I love about the Syncron Player is the articulation tree system. This allows for a layered approach to articulations using multiple keyswitch “roots” that expand each articulation category. Having all the Brass Packs utilize nearly identical keyswitching trees and articulations makes hopping around the brass section a breeze.

The Brass Packs come with “up to 5 velocity layers” and are delivered with both standard presets where dynamics are triggered by velocity sensitivity as well as a “VelXF” preset that allows dynamic layers to be accessed via MIDI CC.

Opening up the instruments for the first time the recording quality just sounds fantastic thanks to the fantastic sample set courtesy of the acoustics of the Synchron Stage and talent of chief recording engineer Bernd Mazagg.

One of the strengths of the Synchron Player that the Brass Packs take advantage of is the Mixer Presets. The Mixer Presets are consistent across VSL‘s Big Bang Orchestra libraries for easy access to blending and controlling a consistent sound across the libraries.

The included mixer presets utilize the multiple microphone positions of the library and can be adjusted or altered to emphasize a section. The Brass Packs each come with an additional close microphone position accessible through the Mixer panel.

The Big Bang Orchestra Brass Packs requires a ViennaKey (or other USB eLicenser, e.g., by Steinberg) to run.

Big Bang Orchestra: Kopernikus

Big Bang Orchestra: Kopernikus

Kopernikus’ playback is clean and clear with little touches of a human element to add just enough character to the trumpet ensemble for depths of realism, but not so much that it will compete with your full orchestral sound.

Big Bang Orchestra: Kopernikus downloads as 5.0 GB and is an ensemble trumpet library that was recorded on the Synchron Stage Vienna.

For the library, the Vienna Symphonic Library team captured 4 Trumpets in Bb with an extensive range of articulations, CC controls and mixing options thanks to the Syncron Player’s mixer presets and additional close microphone options provided with Kopernikus.

Big Bang Orchestra: Kopernikus normally sells for €95 from Vienna Symphonic Library

Big Bang Orchestra: Izar

Big Bang Orchestra: Izar

Izar is a real gem in this collection and expands the Hercules low brass ensemble into a playable, aleatoric instrument with mostly the same articulations offered in the rest of the brass packs. Paired with Hercules, Izar allows for performances and effects that are impossible to fake with standard multi-sampled instruments.

Big Bang Orchestra: Izar downloads as s 3.6 GB and is an ensemble low brass clusters library that was recorded on the Synchron Stage Vienna.

For the library, the Vienna Symphonic Library team captured 4 Bass Trombones, 1 Bass Tuba and 1 Contrabass Tuba. The library comes with mixer presets and additional close microphone options matching the exact sounds and articulation set as Big Bang Orchestra Hercules.

The crossfade patch between Hercules and Izar is a stand out in this collection.

Big Bang Orchestra: Izar normally sells for €85 from Vienna Symphonic Library

Big Bang Orchestra: Jupiter

Big Bang Orchestra: Jupiter

Jupiter’s balance between warm and bold and brassy horns will belnd perfectly with any VSL library recorded on the Synchron stage.

Big Bang Orchestra: Jupiter downloads as 6.37 GB and is an ensemble French Horns library.

The Vienna Symphonic Library team captured an ensemble of six double French horns on the Synchron Stage Vienna with a healthy collection of articulations that match those found throughout the BBO Brass Packs.

Big Bang Orchestra: Jupiter Normally sells for €95 from Vienna Symphonic Library
