First Look: Alternative Solo Strings by Spitfire Audio

UPDATE: After questioning the left-leaning playback, I reached out to Spitfire Audio and they let me know that “This is a known issue and will be resolved at some point this week in a new update.” On Feb 23, 2018 Spitfire released Alternative Solo Strings V 1.0.1b15 which has several adjustments including centering all instruments.

First Look: Alternative Solo Strings by Spitfire Audio

Spitfire Audio has released Alternative Solo Strings, 4 close mic’d solo instruments that have the ability to playback with a bit of realistic unpredictability and expression.

For the Kontakt Player instrument Spitfire packaged up both it’s previously released ‘PP015 Artisan Cello” & ‘PP016 Artisan Violin’ as well as recorded new samples for both Viola and Bass instruments. One big note here is that the Alt Solo Violin and Cello offer users Spitfire’s wonderful Performance Legato while the Viola and Bass do not. The Performance Legato gives the user a setting for playing phrases while the engine does the heavy lifting intelligently detecting legato, staccato and turns simple keyboard input (sans-keyswitching) into smooth, expressive performances.

All instruments come with a nice range of articulations including Staccatissimo, Sustains as well as a series of ‘Artisan’ articulations that add little bends or ornamentation to the performance.

In this first look video above, I take listen through the articulations offered and get a feel for what these instruments might bring to my workflow. Although these strings won’t be replacing your standard solo instruments, they do offer timbres that could come in handy for specialized projects calling on solo strings with more character.

The only odd note I have after the first look is that all sample playback seems to be slightly panned to the left. Although this is consistent throughout all instruments I wondered if this was an intentional choice as I can not think of one. Best practices either would seem to deliver with all instruments in the center or in seating positions so the slight panning left has me scratching my head.

Owners of Artisan Cello and Violin are eligible for a crossgrade so check your account.
At the time of posting Alternative Solo Strings was at an introductory discount price of $199.

Alternative Solo Strings normally sells for $299 from Spitfire Audio
