Evolution Rick 12

Evolution Rick 12 is a kontakt player instrument sampled from a 12-string Rickenbacker electric guitar. For the sample set Orange Tree Samples teamed up with Guy Randle at the Rosewood Recording Company to recorded a vintage model, semi-hollow maple body 12 string Rickenbacker guitar with a rosewood fretboard, and classic high-gain pickups.

Thoughts

If you saw my review of Orange Tree’s Evolution Strawberry, Steel Strings or Modern Nylon  you know I am a big fan of the Evolution engine and the quality of the instruments OTS is putting out.

To be honest when I first heard about the Rick 12 release I really wasn’t that excited.

Why do I need a 12 string electric guitar library? The only thing I remembered about the 12 string Rickenbacker guitar was that George Harrison used one on the Hard Days Night album.

Then I heard Orange Tree’s playthrough video and I was sold!

The tone of this unique guitar OTS has captured is clean and clear with a sparkle you just don’t get from a 6 string guitar. The library was sampled dry so it can be shaped into a huge variety of tones from classical “british invasion” to overtone-saturated harmonic distorted tones to more exotic timbres that seem to excite with every note.

Evolution Rick 12 Presets

Nothing shows off the versatility of the instrument like flipping through the presets. OTS have crafted a great selection of about 40 presets to take you on a sonic 12 string journey. With the presets alone I was able to get some great sounds.

While flipping through the presets I was inspired to start writing and yet eager to see what sonic shimmer the next preset would hold.

You get about 40 some snapshot presets included with the library divided into Clean, Crunchy & Distorted categories.

Evolution Rick 12 FX Rack

Evolution Rick 12 FX Rack

The instrument comes with a full FX rack. As I have mentioned many times in my other reviews I am not a fan of using effects in the kontakt engine and typically stick with using premium plugins for effecting my signal chain. However, the Evolution engine’s great set of stomp boxes and amps do just the trick to add a little distortion, a bit of delay, verb or special effects to the instrument.

The ability to jump back and forth between strumming, using the strum key switches, and playing lead and picked lines is where the Evolution Rick 12 really shines. The Evolution engine’s fantastic body resonance and physical modeling scripting (including a proprietary resonance engine) support a very live and realistic sounding to performances.

Rick12-STRUM

Evolution Rick 12 STRUM engine

The instrument comes with a wonderfully powerful STRUM engine . The strum engine lets you create, load or save strum patters and the performance from the STRUM engine creates some extremely convincing performances. I’ve noted before that I have trouble remembering how to trigger the strum engine to kick in, well it is the green keyswitch at C0 thats starts the strum engines playback,

The SETUP panel of the instrument gives you lots of options for altering the sound of playback including double, triple and quadruple  tracking, pick modeling on/off, pick & release noise amounts, pitch bend settings and more.

As some of you know I am blessed enough to work composing music for spots, tv and films. My primary instrument has been guitar. What I have found since discovering the Evolution engine is that it is much more efficient to work with midi triggering guitar sample libraries while scoring so that I can edit tempo/ time signature when needing to edit to new picture lock (or changes) –  on a deadline. When there really is no time to re-track live guitar the Evolution engine is realistic enough that I can move on and deliver on time.

Evolution Rick 12 is the cherry on top for me as we work on posts for VI Guitar Week. A fantastic surprise, a pleasure to play I’m sure I will be pulling up Rick 12 to substitute a 6 string or when I am looking for something special.
