Checking Out: String Swells by Sonixinema

Sonixinema delivers a specialized library, great for adding a more human touch to strings. They’ve captured the dynamic swell as performed by the players, as opposed to using cc01 and modulating between recorded dynamic layers.

Thoughts

String Swells from Sonixinema is a very specialized library, focusing solely on the dynamic movement and bow changes within a small string ensemble. There is no legato, no shorts, no sustains, just swells! And it definitely delivers on that aspect, and the name obviously implies that’s what you’ll get.
Adding tempo-syncing options to the swells themselves, with five adjustable bar lengths, is a really nice and useful feature. You can simply dial in the exact bar length you want the swell to be, and it will adjust perfectly to your DAW’s tempo. The downside to this is you can sometimes get time-stretching artifacts at certain tempos, but the ability to choose between 5 bar lengths almost completely negates this.
The mic positions are hugely versatile as well, with the close mics being very raw and detailed, capturing the little nuances of the bow across the strings. The ambient and far mics, however, are very wide and lush, and you can dial in reverb to taste- these strings are BONE dry and can be molded to fit into practically any template.
