Checking Out: Solos of the Sea – Solo Violin B by Performance Samples

It’s hard to review a Performance Sample library without going into “fanboy” mode. The developer has made a name for themselves from their humble origins releasing very specialized free libraries for Kontakt to the ever-growing top-notch specialty instrument marketplace.

The developer’s performance-based sampling really shines in the new release, Solo Violin B, and brings with it the ability to create passionate performances at fortissimo which seem to really shine in the instrument’s upper register.

Performance Samples released Solo Violin A awhile back with a focus on creating a legato violin performing at the mf to f dynamic range. Now that I have reviewed both Solo Violin A (see review here) & Solo Violin B I can see how both instruments will excel in what they do for certain passages of music.

Normally I am dissapointed with instruments sampled at just one dynamic layer that use scripting to control volume with playback. But Solo Violin B’s modwheel based expression/dynamics controls the instrument’s sounds so realisticy I do not have any critisism with this feature.

In this video, I play through Solo Violin B and compare it to the sound of Solo Violin A, as well as share a sketch using the instruments to get a feel for how they respond.
