The Production Voices piano bundle is an absolute steal at $99.99! What you have included are four very different and character laden pianos that will provide you a pretty well-rounded selection to use for everything from sketching to scoring. That being said, pianos are a very personal instrument and the market is flush with sample pianos. I have included a number of demos in the video to give you just a brief idea of the overall sound and capability of these pianos but in all honesty that is just scratching the surface. I would encourage you to look at the documentation online for each of these in order to determine if they meet your needs. There is definitely a great bang for the buck here though.
Studio Grand LE
This one was a pleasant surprise as it features four microphone positions in a footprint of less than 1 GB! I really like the overall sound of this piano as it has warm low tones and bright crisp sound in the higher register. Nothing muddy and tinkly that you might find in a smaller less expensive library. This is something, based on the footprint that I would likely use as a really good sketching piano in order to put down my ideas as the memory footprint is extremely small and it easily runs on an older laptop.
Estate Grand Piano
The Estate Grand Is a piano that I had purchased previously as I was really impressed by the sound from the demos and I was not disappointed with the purchase. This one truly is an estate piano sampled in southern Ontario from a Kawai GS 60.It features three microphone positions and adjustment controls for pedal and key noise. Going deeper into the settings, you can also address the key response and velocities smoothing. I found the overall sound of this piano something that sits well in the mix for everything from ambient to Latin. There are a number of included presets in addition to the controls included in the GUI. It has a bright attack and an interesting character that soaks in the warmth of the room that it was recorded in.
The Death Piano is the most character laden piano of the bunch. This is actually a Frankenstein with samples from three different pianos that have been tortured and twisted to create some interesting and useful sounds for both harmony and accent purposes. There are a total of 128 presets Included that come from a Steinway Model D, and upright piano and a parlor piano. The overall interface is quite simplistic although within the settings you have access to three different layers of control to deeply affect sound of any of the loaded presets. Many of the presets have a number of varieties to them such as the E Bow category or the metallic sounds. This is not an instrument where you should expect to hear too much standard piano unless it is buried under reverb and delay. It is really something that is much more useful as a sound design tool and to add color and texture to existing compositions. This has definitely become one that has grown on me.
Production Grand 2 LE
Of the pianos included in this bundle, the Production Grand LE is definitely the centerpiece and by far the most feature-rich instrument in the bundle. This is actually the entry-level version of Production Voices flagship product Production Grand 2. This definitely carries the largest footprint as it is an 8 microphone position sampled Yamaha C7. There are nearly 43,000 samples included in the piano was sampled with 12 velocity layers. This was definitely a passion project were no expense was spared to capture the perfect sound. There is a great deal of control that is afforded to the player in adjusting everything from paddling noise and velocity to microphone mixing and some really nice extras like Tape Saturation, Transient Design, EQ and Reverb controls. It does feature sympathetic resonance control and control for touch sensitivity which I found particularly unusual for a piano at this price point.
Like I said at the very beginning of this review, the piano is a very personal instrument and there are many too many to choose from out there. I definitely have been a fan of the Estate Grand and definitely have found a place for few of these in my rotation as well. The bottom line is, this is a really fantastic deal for a pretty well-rounded bundle that covers the gamut of piano needs.
Make sure that you check out all of the demos and product documentation to make sure that this is the right product for your individual needs.
